De opzet van "De Sneeuwstorm" (1856) is ontleend aan een nacht in januari 1854 toen Tolstoj gedurende de Kaukasusoorlog in een sneeuwstorm terechtkwam. De novelle is een fictionele vertelling van die gebeurtenis. Het fictionele zit hem vooral in Tolstojs drang tot mythevorming, zodat de vertelling doorspeend is met symboliek. De verteller die in de sneeuwstorm terechtkomt wordt tot een soort universele held gemaakt; de reis door het gebergte is te lezen als een analogie voor het leven zelf;...
