About the Author

Theresa Braun was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and has carried some of that hardiness with her to South Florida where she currently resides with her two fur babies, who are her creative sidekicks. She enjoys delving into creative writing, painting, photography and even bouts of ghost hunting. Perhaps growing up in a haunted house in Winona, Minnesota is to blame. If it’s haunted, it’s on her “to visit” list. Traveling is one of her passions—in fact, her latest adventure took her to Romania for a horror writers’ workshop where she followed in the steps of Vlad the Impaler. She writes horror fiction and the occasional romance—they definitely have things in common, right? She also likes to guest blog about writing, television shows, movies, and books, mostly in the horror genre. Her short story “Shout at the Devil” appears in Under the Bed Magazine and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” in Hindered Souls.

Dead over heels is a paranormal short story written about two people that meet up through online dating. They like each other, but their ghosts of the pasts threaten their chance of being together and being happy. The concept of short stories normally doesn’t fulfill the reader with character development or a solid foundation, simply because it is a short story. However, the author managed to create a great plot, add a nice twist to it and even sprinkle romance on the whole endeavor. Veronica and Sebastian were both developed with very interesting personalities. Their personalities were relatable, and it was easy to bond with them. It was clear that the storyline was written with care and that made me enjoy this book even more. I believe anyone that likes to read short stories and is into paranormal stories would find this book appealing.

When it comes to short stories of any form, whether it’s simply that or a novella, I’m always iffy. Usually there’s certain details that can be expounded upon or characters that don’t develop entirely. After all, there’s only so much that can be accomplished without a full length novel. Opening up Theresa Braun’s novellette, Dead Over Heels, I can’t recall what I thought. I definitely didn’t expect something so totally complete. Dead Over Heels begins setting the scene for a couple of after some sort of incident. Using the “hook and return” concept, Braun then goes backwards to tell readers how the main characters, Veronica and Sebastian, ended up where they are. What unfolds is a hauntingly sweet tale of the joys and frustrations of dating, coupled with a few darker notes. As the story progresses, things take a supernatural turn that not only kept me on the edge of my seat, but blew me away. I did not see the ending coming, and that is a feat. I can’t wait to read more from Braun! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

This short story opens with the narrator and her boyfriend sitting in a police station, then it goes back into the past, a month ago, their online meeting, and then a date. In the The River House restaurant, where they went for their date, they notice a couple, but the waiter firmly believes that no one was sitting on the table they were talking about. Then as their relationship proceeds, their past revisits, secrets are spilled and soon their lives goes topsy-turvy…. Dead over Heels story was actually- eerie-creepy-scary and thrilling. It kept me on the edge of my seat, almost throughout the book. Definitely it was a quite a engaging read. The story line was good, it was predictable at parts but mostly unpredictable. I even loved the predictable parts. Though this story had a supernatural/paranormal angle, but it didn’t feel much unbelievable. The story just kept me so engrossed, with a pageturner effect that I somewhat didn’t get the time or desire to judge it’s believeablity. The climax, was chilling and horrifying, being true to the genre horror. The romance between the leads was sweet, a nice reprieve from the scary experience. Overall I would say it was quick and engaging read that I recommend to all horror lovers.

Dead Over Heels, is an unusual story with a paranormal twist. Unlucky in love Veronica creates a spell to find her soul mate. Not long after she ends up on a blind date with Sebastian at ‘The River House’ Restaurant. The two hit it off immediately, but whilst they are enjoying themselves Veronica notices a strange couple on the next table, not eating or drinking, and the woman looks very familiar. Sebastian asks the waiter to take them a round of drinks, but the bemused waiter tells him that no-one has been sitting there all night. One month later, Veronica and Sebastian are back at the restaurant to celebrate their one month anniversary. Sitting at the exact table they did the first time they dined there, they are shocked when the couple from their first date suddenly appear out of thin air, and sits at the next table again. They both realise that there is ghostly activity going on, but could the ghosts spell danger for Veronica and Sebastian? Dead Over Heels is a quick read at only 38 pages long, but there is so much going on in the story that it feels much longer. I love how Theresa has combined a love story, with a paranormal one. Veronica and Sebastian are very likeable characters, and it would seem that whether Veronica conjured up her soul mate, or whether fate intervened, the two were made for one another. The ghostly happenings are a fantastic plot twist, but I won’t say anymore, or I’ll give the plot away! Let’s just say that I didn’t predict the ending, even when the book opens with a snippet of it. Very enjoyable, and full on from beginning to end.

I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review. Ok for a short dark paranormal story it was ok. I'm giving it 2 stars because I thought it could have been so much more. She writes very well and it was an easy read to get sucked into. I wish it had been longer and more in depth. It had such potential to be a full length novel. Don't get me wrong I really enjoyed the author and I think her writing ability is spot on. I intend to look into other works and see what else she has to offer.
