I just finished reading through the whole Adrien English mysteries and I have to say that this one was my favorite of the five. I really liked the mystery and the ending was just magnificent. I also love who things are never easy for Adrien and that things don't simply just work out. It gives the book a realistic edge. Love it!

Death of a Pirate King is the fourth in the Adrien English Mysteries series by the wonderfully talented Josh Lanyon. Adrien once again is confronted by death when a person with whom he was talking at a party suddenly keels over into his plate. And whom should come to investigate but homicide detective and former-boyfriend-turned-current-buttwipe Lieutenant Jake Riordan. Adrien becomes one of the primary suspects when autopsy reveals that the cause of death is overdose of a heart medication mixed in a drink. A medication that Adrien takes in a drink that Adrien served the hapless man. Coincidence? Apparently cynical Lt. Riordan thinks not. Sweet and snarky Adrien is caught up in another adventure of murder and intrigue, complicated by narcissistic actors, exasperating family members, and a super sexy ex-boyfriend who revs Adrien's engines like no other. Too bad he already has a new lover. A highly recommended read for any fan of murder mysteries. *Note: Although DOPK could be read as a stand alone, some areas are very nuanced, and would be better understood if the previous three books were read first.

The best book yet in this series....Once again Adrien gets involved in a murder, which brings him back into contact with LAPD LT. Jake Riordan, his former on again, off again "romance". This tale takes place 2 years after the last book. Adrien has not seen Jake, since they parted when Jake announced he was getting married and wanted to make a go of his marriage and parenthood. Adrien has tried to move on, but opening his heart again to his current boyfriend, Guy has not been easy. This is a fast paced mystery that answers all questions by the last paragraph, but still keeps me wanting more. Will Adrien find the killer? Will he make a go of it with Guy? Or will Jake's presence in his life once again, prove fatal to his already weak heart?....What I love about these characters is how strongly developed they are and written with such honesty. Hats off to Josh Lanyon. He makes you care about Adrien and the mix bag of characters in these novels. He made, what could have been another mundane Gay Murder mystery series into wonderful, exciting books that grow with each passing novel. And with this one, we grow to love Adrien even more and understand Jake's complex life. I can't wait for the next chapter.

The fourth volume in Lanyon's contemporary mystery series picks up two years after the end of the third book. Adrien English *thinks* he is happy and has his life together -- until he winds up in the middle of yet another murder investigation and Jake Riordan walks back into his life. I love how they dance around one another, trying to figure out how they fit together, or not. And the ending is ridiculously romantic. I can't wait to read the next book; too bad it will be the last one. -- lyradora

~Reviewed by ANN & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog Jake Riordan is so damn mysterious that in a way, he’s just another one of the mysteries that Adrien is trying to figure out. ~ Under the Covers It’s been two years since the events of THE HELL YOU SAY and Adrien and Jake have been living their own lives separately. Jake has received a promotion and is now married to his policewoman wife, Kate while Adrien is steadily seeing Guy Snowden. They are brought together once again when Adrien’s book, Murder Will Write is optioned for a film by a Hollywood actor named Paul Kane and a murder happens. Police suspect various people and Adrien is once again caught in the midst it all. I don’t think I could ever get tired of these books. Adrien English is a character that you don’t see often. He is so multi-facted and three-dimensional that he almost feels real. He has his vulnerabilities – his inability to open up to a relationship and his heart problem, but he is also courageous, stubborn and determined to a fault. The guy is just so damn likeable and being in his head is always a fun experience from beginning to end. I love the dry sense of humor he has. It fits so well with the tense action scenes and lightens up the mood when needed. He’s just magnetic – he reels you in and there’s no other place better to be! If you made it this far into this series, then you may have experienced a love/hate relationship with Jake Riordan. Let’s face it – the guy can be a total penis head. But I love him and I know you secretly do too since you’ve continued this series. There’s just something about him that is mysteriously alluring. We hear about his extracurricular activities and you want to know more about him. You see his reactions to certain things Adrien says and you can’t help but wonder what he is thinking about. All this, is what makes me love him. He’s so damn mysterious that in a way, he’s just another one of the mysteries that Adrien is trying to figure out. Jake and Adrien have been through so much already. Them being together is probably the toughest thing to achieve because of Jake’s job and his personal life. However, Jake makes some pretty big leaps in this book that I’m really proud of. He really puts himself out there and Adrien doesn’t make it easy for him. He walks away and that gutted me. However, Jake’s gesture says it all. He makes a decision at the end of this book that will catapult the next and final book in the series and I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS!!! I’m sad that this series is almost over. I think I could have read about them forever. The Adrien English series is a definite must-read for M/M fans. It really has it all. Do not miss out on it!
