Their food supply exhausted, they are forced to live off the land with possibly hostile native tribes nearby. Then when they make the decision to chance return - severely underpowered and risk being lost forever - they do the unthinkable - they scuttle the control room pod leaving it behind somewhere in the past.
That forced decision holds serious consequences if The Network can't locate it and bring it back.
