"At a little after 8:00 a.m. on January 15, Rader cut the phone line at the house where he'd previous seen a mother and her eleven-year-old daughter, and he barged in through the back door. To his surprise, the father was still at home, as was their young son. In addition, there was a dog. Nevertheless Rader took control and convinced them he was a fugitive from the law in California who was headed for New York and wanted only food, money, and their car. One by one he murdered the four, saving the girl for last and masturbating onto the bare legs of her semi-nude corpse, leaving behind his semen. After the crime Rader departed, taking the father's watch and a radio as trophies. Police were mystified by the crime, and the community was horrified. "
