Devil in the Deadline (Headlines in High Heels Series #4) by LynDee Walker

"Nichelle proves herself to be a standout. She has the cynicism of jaded police officers but also the hope of a champion and advocate for justice. Of course, a healthy sense of humor always helps. Readers who enjoy the outstanding novels of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Edna Buchanan will find themselves similarly entertained by this stellar series by another award-winning journalist." - Kings River Life Magazine

When the Richmond police offer an exclusive in exchange for help with a case, nothing-not even a costume party-stops crime reporter Nichelle Clarke from making Manolo tracks to the crime scene. The hunt leads her to a televangelist's compound in the Virginia countryside where the Reverend may be more interested in fat stacks of cash than he is saving wayward souls.

With two sexy guys tangled up in Nichelle's story-and in her heart-work and love are on a crash course for disaster. Pressure pours in from every corner, including a faceless new competitor that means the deadline is always five minutes ago. As secrets threaten and the truth becomes her lifeline, Nichelle must unmask the killer and nail down the story before she's snared in the carefully-constructed web.

"Walker's journalistic background fuels her snappy dialogue, thrill-of-the-chase plotting, and A-List fashion sense. Headlines in High Heels is a top-notch cozy mystery series readers will enjoy slipping into." - Julia Spencer-Fleming, New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author of Through the Evil Days

"When the answers are all revealed, they come together in a nice little package that is wrapped up neatly for the reader. Even so, it leaves questions for Nichelle, which, I am sure, will be carried into the next book in this series. Recommended." - Any Good Book

"Walker just continues to get better and better with the Headlines in High Heels series. My patience will be sorely tested by October 2015!" - Lyn Faulkner, NetGalley Reviewer

Great Book! This is a great Series; it is the fourth book in the A Nichelle Clarke Headlines in Heels Mystery series by LynDee Walker. It can be read as a standalone, but once you read one you will want to read the rest of the books in the series. Nichelle is a crime reporter and nothing will stop her from getting the lead on a story. So when the police offer her an exclusive in exchange for help with the case, she jumps at the chance. She is determined to find out the real story of why this girl was murdered and who she was running from. This book is great it has it all, romance, humor, mystery and suspense. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.  A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

Devil In The Deadline is Book Four in the A Headlines in High Heels Mystery series. I recommend reading this fun mystery and I'm excited to read Author LynDee Walker's next book. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. This review is one hundred percent my opinion.

This is Lyndee's 4th book in the Headlines in High Heels series. I have read each book in this series and found them all to be a fun, easy read.  Nichelle Clark always seems to be running head first into whatever may be in her way. Even if it happens to be a murder. She doesn't hesitate to jump right in, be it a friend or a stranger that was murdered. Following clues that might be deadly are of not much concern to her.  In her social life, is amazes me that she is able to juggle 2 hunkie men. One is with the ATF, the other? Oh no big deal that he is with the Mafia. Talk about protection! What more could a girl ask for?  Pick up any of Lyndee's books, and I don't think you will regret it. FTC Full Disclosure - A copy of this book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.

Title: Devil In the Deadline - Nichelle Clarke Headlines in Heels Mystery 4 Author: Lyn Dee Walker Published: 4-8-14 Publisher: Henery Press Pages: 282 Genre: Mystery, Thrillers & Suspense Sub Genre: Cozy Mystery, Women Sleuth, ISBN: 9781940976617 ASIN: B00ODQS5TU Reviewer: DelAnne Reviewed For: NetGalley . Nichelle is back with her usual sass and charm and always in her best designer shoes. She is offered an exclusive by the local law enforcement if she will help them with their investigation into the ritualistic murder of a homeless woman. Nichelle knows she can get answers from people who will not talk with police. The how is a blogger getting information and posting it all over the internet. Nichelle's interviews the homeless, some who claimed to know the victim. Her investigation leads her to a Television Church and to the charismatic preacher who runs it. He seems a bit on the smarmy side. Joey and Kyle once again are there to help her in her investigation and watch her back as she inevitably land herself in hot water. Once again I have followed LynDee Walker's heroine as she searches for answers in some unsavory places. I did not put the book down as I tried to figure out who did it before it was revealed in the book. I can say I actually did figure it out a few pages before it was revealed this time. As always I enjoy stopping in and visiting with Nichelle and her friends. I look forward to my next visit. With strong characters and a plot that keeps you guessing. This is the fourth book in the Headline in High Heels series, but can stand on its own. Warning though once you read one of the books in this series you will soon be looking to read all others in the series as well.

Devil in the Deadline, a cozy mystery by LynDee Walker, is an amazing book. It is the fourth book in the Headlines in High Heels Mystery series, and the best book in the series yet!  [NOTE: This book can be read as a stand-alone, as far as solving the mystery itself; however, to understand everything that's going on with Nichelle and the two guys she's tangled up with, as well as the back-story of the other returning characters, I recommend reading the series books in order.] Author LynDee Walker's books have a depth to them, not typically found in cozies, that is due to LynDee's background as a reporter. Her background also gives an authenticity to Nichelle and her work, which adds greatly to my love of her series.     The book opens with crime reporter Nichelle Clarke at the scene of a grisly murder. Here is a brief passage with Nichelle and cop Aaron: > He stepped to one side and ice washed over me in the balmy summer air, a scream sticking in my throat. > "Evil. Evil is the only word I've got." Aaron's low voice barely crossed the blood pounding in my ears. "I've been a cop for twenty years, and I've never seen anything like this." Because of the identity of the victim and the suspects, the police need Nichelle's investigative assistance. Nichelle also has her hands full with the two sexy men in her life. All of this makes for a fast-paced book that was very hard for me to put down. Devil in the Deadline is also a fun read, because of Nichelle's wit, intelligence, and sense of humor. Author LynDee Walker has outdone herself with this fourth entry in her Headlines in High Heels Mystery series. I highly recommend the fantastic Devil in the Deadline, which has earned my highest rating of Five Stars.   Note:  I  received a complimentary copy of Devil in the Deadline from the publisher and Great Escapes Book Tours, in exchange for an honest opinion of the book. 4 STARS This is the fourth book of the series A Nichelle Clarke Headlines in Heels Mystery . It was a good mystery, violence but just hints about how bad the crime was. Nichelle is a newspaper reporter on the crime beat in Richmond, VA. her main completion is a T.V. reporter Charlie , and another reporter who wants her job. Now there is a Blogger who is scooping her with more details. Nichelle has two guys in her life. One is old boyfriend Kyle who is ATF officer. The other has ties to the mafia. Nichelle gets called into a terrible murder because the cops want help that she might be able to get. Two homeless found the grisly murder victim. Nichelle has a good rep with police, other reporters. She works hard and long. She cares about the safety of others, doing the right thing. I like Nichelle and want to see more of her. I was given this ebook to read and in return I agreed to give a honest review of Devil in the Deadline and be part of its blog tour.

ARC/Mystery with shoes: The book just came out so no spoilers here. I liked this book a lot. I read it in about two sittings. If I like a book, mistakes in police procedure and common sense would have been unforgivable. If I enjoy a book, I hit it "Frozen" and let them go. The writing wasn't as smooth as I would have hoped for considering this is the author's fifth book in the series. I liked the main character and her quirkiness for shoes. The good thing about a mystery is that there is always an ending. With all the trilogy crap flying around, this book worked for me. It was easy to catch up with the storyline from previous books. I did get this book from Goodreads in return for a honest review, but there were no heels to come with it. :(

This is the fourth in the series and just as good as the first three.  The story line had me pulled into Nichelle's latest adventure from the first page and there was plenty of action and suspense to keep me reading until the the mystery was solved.  This one can be read as a stand alone, but after you read this one you will definitely want to read the others.  I certainly hope there will be more to come in this series.

Dollycas’s Thoughts Nichelle Clarke is a crime reporter with excellent taste in fine footwear and she doesn’t let those high heels hold her back when she needs to climb to the latest crime scene. The scene she finds is just ghastly and almost beyond words. But her new competition, a blogger, has no problem putting all the gruesome details out there. The big question is where is she getting her information. Nichelle is supposed to have an exclusive agreement with the cops! for her help in the investigation. That investigation puts Nichelle’s life in danger but she will do anything to get the story and catch a killer. It doesn’t hurt that she has her old high school boyfriend, now ATF Agent Kyle and a hunk like Joey with his questionable underworld ties watching her back, but can they keep her safe this time? This entire series is absolutely awesome. Each story is just full of action, thrills, romance and humor too! LynDee Walker just keeps topping herself! I love the characters! Nicey is such a strong woman and she is always on a deadline. This time she receives help from a very unlikely person. She also never knows when bad-boy Joey (no last name) will appear but his kisses never fail to curl her toes. Kyle is still interested in rekindling their romance and while she knows his last name and he would offer her a more stable life there is just no toe curling. But he isn’t giving up. I also like her editor at the paper. He seems like a man with common sense in an industry that is changing on a daily basis. He fights hard for his job and for Nichelle and makes an excellent sounding board for her. The plot is fantastic. The crime seems to be pure evil and the twists really add to the suspense. We also learn more about Nichelle and the story ends with quite a cliffhanger. LynDee Walker’s journalist’s skills shine and have made her an excellent mystery writer.

A grisly murder, a church that might be a cult and the mafia all play a part in Devil in the Deadline, the fourth book in A Headlines in Heels Mystery series by LynDee Walker.  Continuing to develop this series, Ms. Walker takes us on a journey through Richmond as the characters try solving a murder involving homeless youth.  While a part of a series, this book can be enjoyed on its own. An experienced reporter, Nichelle Clarke is not surprised to be called to a crime scene while dressed for a party.  A gruesome scene filled with lots of blood and the body of a young homeless woman.  Offered an exclusive by Richmond Police Department Spokesman Aaron White, Nichelle agrees to interview some homeless witnesses for the police.  He thinks she’ll have a better chance of getting them to talk because the homeless don’t always trust the police.    What begins as an investigation into the death of one woman soon becomes more complicated when Nichelle’s personal life and her work end up in a tangle and discovering the truth could cost Nichelle her life. Ms. Walker does a good job continuing to develop Nichelle’s character; smart, ambitious and determined to get the scoop first, she’s also got good ethics when it comes to her job and sincerely cares for others.  While her professional life is fairly under control, Nichelle’s love life is a lot more complicated.  Involved with two very different men, she’s having a hard time making a choice.  Especially since one is an ATF agent and the other is involved with the mob.  While she’s got plenty of angst on the romantic front, Nichelle also has family issues she’s been ignoring for some time, which she’ll have to deal with because of a possible connection to the case she’s investigating. The secondary characters are well developed and I enjoyed getting to see Nichelle interact with her co-workers.  Especially since her ongoing “battle” with Shelby takes an interesting turn because of this case.  I especially enjoyed that Nichelle’s mom made a real appearance in this book, and that she is forced to tell Nichelle the truth about her birth.  The mystery is well developed and takes several interesting twists and turns.  The police don’t know if they are dealing with a serial killer or if it’s just a one-time kill for personal reasons.  There are also ritualistic patterns they can’t ignore which could induce a panic by the public if they don't handle things right.  Nichelle does a good job investigating for her daily story and she’s the one who really seems to make all of the important discoveries – it’s like she’s got an extra sense about these things, you know like a "crime whisperer".   Will Nichelle discover the identity of the killer before she becomes his next victim?  And just how are a televangelist and the members of his church connected to the mob?  You’ll have to read Devil in the Deadline to find out.  I enjoyed it and can’t wait to read Nichelle’s next adventure.

In the last book, Small Town Spin, we started to delve into Nichelle's familial background. Much more is hinted at, guessed at and finally revealed. Plus there is some set up for coming books, left dangling at the end. Not really a cliff hanger... more of a teaser of things to come. Let's not forget the love triangle, which I am not normally a big fan of, but has worked in this instance for me. We have the former high school boyfriend and ATF agent Kyle, and the super sexy mafia connected Joey. There is one scene where the two guys once again meet face to face at Nichelle's. They are giving each other the old hairy eyeball and emitting Alpha pheromones all over the place. Nichelle's response? She got in her car and left them to it. How I would love to have been a fly on the wall of the conversation between them...  Just sayin'. I can't wait to see how this is going to play out in the end. Regulars make appearances. Of course, we have the return of Aaron, the police officer spokesman and Exclusive Tip giver, and Bob, her editor, father figure and one of my favorite people.  We also get some face time with Parker and many of their Richmond Telegraph co-workers. Nichelle's relationships really help to give her depth and come alive on the page.  The Nichelle Clark books just keep getting better and better. I went back and looked to see what I gave the last book, Small Town Spin, (5 stars) because wowzers, this book surpassed it.  I had a guest post with LynDee back when Buried Leads came out in October 2013. LynDee stated that she had been given the advice to “Write a better book next time. And the time after that. That is how you build a career.” Mission accomplished! I am still totally hooked on this series. Another 5 star read.

Sigh. I am really enjoying this series but this one, book 4, definitely made me dial back my enthusiasm a bit. Nichelle is one the trail of a murderer who committed what seems to be a ritualistic killing of a homeless woman. Her contact at the police station is giving her exclusive information in return for some of the help she can provide but it’s not just her rival, Charlie, at the TV station that is challenging her for scoops. There is a blogger reporting on crime in Richmond that seems to have some type of inside track. She’s feeling like every minute is a deadline these days. Her investigation leads to her to a televangelist’s organization and that can be a pretty tough nut to crack. She shows her usual flair for following a story and in the course of it, learns a huge amount about her family history. We get to know her mom better and Nichelle become a more fully-rounded character. If you’ve not read the other books in the series, you can read this as a stand-alone but I think you will enjoy it more if you read the series in order. So here’s the problems. 1. There is a lot of talk about the church hiding donations from the IRS. The problem is, churches aren’t required to report their donations to the IRS. Some do, some don’t. The vast majority don’t. Income made from a bookstore or coffee shop has to be reported but donations absolutely do not. I know exactly what I’m talking about with this. This isn’t even a little bit in question. This is such a glaring issue that my enjoyment of the book was interrupted as I kept checking this on different websites to see if something had changed that I didn’t know about. It hadn’t. 2. The love triangle has taken exactly the turn we didn’t want it to. The two guys have become open rivals and it needs to stop now. This could really tank the series for me if it’s not ended really quickly. I really love this series and these problems won’t stop me from reading more but it did dial back my enthusiasm a bit. I’ll actually be eagerly awaiting book 5 to see how this progresses. This book was provided by Netgalley and I appreciated the opportunity to read and review it.

My interest waned in book # 4. Many unansered questions.
