Chapter 1: The Shadow in the Sky The Shadow in the Sky
There is a shadow in the sky.

At first glance, it looks like a dark cloud, but no. It is a long shadow of something approaching.

Of something from beyond the sky.

Of something that is coming.

The shadow is there, day and night, and it is growing and spreading. The stars that watch it shudder, for they know that now there is no stopping it.

High in the sky there is a hidden den. Made of bone and ice, it twists and turns, and should not stay afloat, but it is crackling with magic. With power.

A swirling cloud of dust and fumes protects the maze. Poison permeates the air, and every breath you take leaves you more dazed. The closer you get to the center, the colder it becomes. The coldness, and the confusion, is inescapable.

And what lies in the center...? What is waiting for you in the maze...?

Horrors await. Horrors that will strike such fear into your heart that you will find yourself petrified. And you will join others like yourself. Frozen and floating and trapped. Unable to leave the maze, until the Devourer arrives—but by then, all will be lost.

Distinctly gamelike in plot and language, this second series entry plunges riders and rides into a series of set piece challenges and quests—such as being swallowed by a giant shark-dragon. These challenges allow each of them to show off their “signature move” while learning to control their fears in order to fend off the Petrifiers, who wield terror as a weapon and have frozen some members of Dragon Force. Inspired by the celestial Starlight Dragon’s encouragement (“Do not fear your destiny. Embrace it”), 12-year-old Lance Lo and his 10-year-old sister, Zoe, who have a white British mother and a Chinese British father, lead the multinational human and dragon cast into a climactic confrontation that diverts the transgalactic gourmand…though only at the cost of a heartrending sacrifice. Typecast as the incidents and characters may be, they do represent appealing versions of their kind, and by way of development, the remaining humans do come away with cool new powers thanks to advanced, personalized super-suits.
