Difficult Times: Labrador's Innu Indians

Colored by dawn's light, a pinkish mist clung to the lake's calm waters. Gradually, the Innu Indians' autumn hunting camp came to life. Outside their tent, Uniam and his friend Pinip quietly prepared for the day's hunting. Taciturn, weathered, sturdy men, they carried a wooden canoe to the water's edge, then loaded aboard rifles, traps, and other hunting equipment. When all was ready I scrambled into the canoe, followed by Winjap (Dirty Eyes), Uniam's eager dog.
