Overview

Gage was the first guy I ever wanted. He was my first crush and my first fantasy, but he wasn't my first in any other way because he never saw me as anything more than a friend- at least not until the night that changed everything.

It was all Gage's fault. He insisted we drive through the storm and take the back roads. By the time the storm hit full force we had no chance. One night of snowbound sex changed our relationship forever. The problem was at the same time I caught another guy's attention. This other guy happened to be the alpha of a pack of shifter wolves. I thought the wolves were the worst of my problems, but I was wrong. When things went from bad to worse I had to make a lifelong sacrifice to save Gage, but what price is too much to save the one you love?

This is one of those books I have to take a few moments to gather my thoughts before I rush into a review. Don't get me wrong...I enjoyed the story, there just was some parts that made the storyline hard for me to shallow. I’ll get to that in a bit. Let me start off by saying that I love Gage. Like love-love him. He is a great character that I ended up loving more and more as the story unfolded. Mary Anne? I liked her, but wasn't in love with her character. But she was ok. As for Hunter...no! Just no. He is one of those characters you scream and scream at, trying to make them see reason to no avail. Read on, you'll see. Okay, so here is where parts of the storyline got me. I think my problem was how everything seemed to center around sex. Again, don't get me wrong. There is a story here, but it evolved around sex. To me, the storyline started out good. Really good. Until the wolves showed up and then it seemed like a meeting of the horn dogs. (Wolf pun intended.) Everyone wanted a piece. And don't get me started on the twist towards the end. I think the story had great potential to go somewhere amazing or do something spectacular with it, but it just got to me and not in a good way. But I am holding out faith for book 2. I know Ivy has something up her sleeve and I cannot wait to see what it is. DIRE is a quick read that had me glued to my ereader, eagerly devouring it until I couldn't hold my eyes open any longer....only to pick it up and finish it as soon as I was awake the next morning. I really do look forward to what is going to happen next, as the ending left me wanting and needing more. Mary Anne and Gage have found themselves in quite the predicament. 4 Wolfy Stars!

I really like Alyssa' books, but not this one. I wish there was a little more back history between Gage and Mary Ann, other than we grew up together in the same small town. Then how quickly they slept together. Then the whole Hunter thing. I just don't know what to think about it all. It was really confusing and had the whole feeling of women are not equal, men are superior bull crap. Forcing her to stay there against her will by threatening Gages life, and become his mate. What??? The story just felt rushed, and missing pieces. Then throw in the witches that belittle men and treat them like dogs. It just wasn't my kind of book

If Dire is anything to go by, I think this series will be fantastic too. Throw me to the wolves any day... well at least these kinds of wolves anyway. The wolves are still a bit of a mystery to me, but I like that, and I think we'll get to more of the meat and potatos of these wolves in the next book. Within this story, we got to know Mary Anne and Gage very well. The perspectives fluctuated between the two. I really liked Gage. I think he is a good choice for Mary Anne. Of course, I'm drawn to the mysterious alpha wolf, Hunter, even more. I don't have a favorite just yet as I have hang ups regarding both guys at this point, so I'm still on the fence as to who I'm rooting for completely. Like all of Alyssa Rose Ivy's books, I'm already hooked. I absolutely love this world she has created and, it's so much fun to have more than one series to vicariously live through within The Society. Dire by Alyssa Rose Ivy was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.

I am a huge Alyssa Rose Ivy fan and just love all of her books. Her Crescent Chronicles and its spin-off series the Empire Chronicles are both some of my favorite paranormal series out there.  Needless to say, I have been really looking forward to reading Dire, the first book in The Dire Wolf Chronicles.  I must say that Dire is a bit different that the other paranormal books I've read by Alyssa Rose Ivy before.  It has a kind of darker feel to it, and though it is obvious from the synopsis what the Dire wolves are, it's kind of like watching one of those scary movies when you're own the edge of your seat waiting for the bad guy to jump out of the closet or something - and I mean that in a good way.  Mary Anne and Gage, the guy she's had a major crush on forever it seems, are on their way home for break from college.  She's known him all her life, but Gage has always considered her more of a little sister, that is until recently, when he's been noticing she isn't so little anymore.  One thing leads to another and they find themselves in a heated night of passion despite the freezing temperatures outside.  They also find themselves in a very bad situation, one that changes their lives forever.  I liked both Mary Anne and Gage's characters, but it took a while for Gage to grow on me, though he did as the book progressed.  Both Mary Anne and Gage are confronted with their feelings with one another and how deep those go suddenly, and just what they are willing to sacrifice to keep the other safe.  Then there there is Hunter, the alpha of the shifter pack of Dire wolves who also has plans for Mary Anne  While I wasn't crazy about him, I do think there is potential for my opinion to change as the series progresses, so I am not writing him off yet, but will wait and see where things go before I make that decision.  There are also some surprising things that happen that just add more suspense to the story that I look forward to finding out more about also. Overall, I did enjoy Dire.  A good majority of the book seemed as if it was setting the stage or laying the groundwork for the series, and it didn't start really getting on the edge of your seat exciting until neared the end, which by the way, has left me in "dire" need (sorry I couldn't resist) for the next book in the series.  Dire is a great beginning to what looks to be another outstanding paranormal series by Alyssa Rose Ivy, and is most definitely something I would recommend checking out.

Dire is the first book in the Dire Wolves Chronicles and I can't say how thrilled I am that this series has just begun! These wolves have me HOOKED! It's a great new, darker, twist on werewolves! The end to this book left me speechless and I am ATTEMPTING to wait patiently for the next installment! Alyssa has given us another amazing book that I was unable to put down until I finished. The characters are great and you get more of that hilarious, sarcastic banter that helps to make Alyssa's book so great! Mary Anne and Gage are hard-headed, spontaneous, funny, & strong! Such a GREAT read!
