I first picked up this book, honestly, for two reasons. It was inexpensive on my Nook, and it was about Louisiana, no matter that it was set in Texas. Confusing? It will make sense when you read the book, never fear. The whole Louisiana thing? Yes, it has been an obsession for years, ever since I left the South, and never found my way back again. Be that as it may, the story immediately grabbed me, and soothed me into a long day of immersing myself into a culture I know and love. The prologue introduces you to a community of secrets, secrets deep as the bayou and as all encompassing as the waters of the Black Lake itself. The story begins when the main character, Leonie, is only a child, a child who is 'different' as her family is 'different.' And this difference, while actually a thing of beauty, is a true danger to the members of the large, extended family living by the lake. I was enchanted by the 'difference' that the lake people share. And as I read this book, and then "Veiled Eyes" the second Lake People novel, it led me to think about just how much 'difference' can guide the development of your life from the minute you are born. It isn't just this one, special, difference, but the whole concept of being 'different.' God knows, I grew up 'different' - but without the sense of community that Leonie's family offered, even if she, in her particular difference, didn't even fit in comfortably in la famille. But Leonie did survive it, survive and thrive, something I wish that I could have done. Read the book. Really. Then read Veiled Eyes, or in the opposite order if you so wish. But read them. They have heart and soul, and will leave you more than ready for the next one. Yes, she is writing another, I wrote my very first 'fan letter' and she actually wrote back - does that rock, or what? P.S. - And then read her other books. I have read "Bubba and the Dead Woman" and am off to review that one, too. I will read her others too, without a doubt. As good as these three are, funny, warm, thoughtful, and downright _Good_ I know I can't go wrong!

Veiled eyes was first in this series. If you haven't read it you should, but this book can stand alone. Characters developed well, as is the plot. Good twists, and a fun ending. I've come to expect a lot from this author. I have only been disappointed by one of her books, but it has received good reviews from other people. I'm getting ready to start another of her series.

CL Bevill is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. She astounds me at how wonderfully she can write. Everything she writes is so good!! This book in particular was breathtakingly good. I actually found myself holding my breath while i read the parts where Leonie was in trouble or fighting off the bad guy (trying not to give anything away so i wont get detailed). Leonie is a really great character. She is braver than i think i could be. Hope to see her and her man pop up in another Lake People book. Hope there are many more Lake People books!!!! To CL Bevill: PLEASE!!!!!!!

Really enjoyed this book. Had the right amount of drama, suspense and psychological mind games to keep me flipping pages. I did read Veiled Eyes first, by the same author, which helped explain some of the content, but its not a requirement to understand the storyline. Did not give 5 stars due to some editing issues. With that being said, the editing did not detract from the story, but it was noticable. Great read!

This is a long book but never drags. It is full of suspense and twists and turns and keeps you guessing. C. L. Bevill is now one of my favorite authors. I have read five of her books and am looking for more! She does not disappoint.

I read this book after I read Veiled Eyes and it did not disappoint. Both books kept me interested. The suspense was so good. Even if I guessed where the story was going, there was always a twist that came completely unexpectedly. Great book. Really enjoyed it!

Second book I have read by C.L.Bevill and loved the twist and turns mystery, normally read romance but this was very good. I wish they would make a movie or T.V. series, I can picture Johnny Depp in the movie...

I was very impressed with Veiled Eyes and then I began this one. I was completely enthralled. I was reading during my lunch break everyday and late into the nights. This was better than any Stephen King I have read! I sincerely hope there are more Lake People stories to come!

The Lake People novels are very good if you like physic and telepath stories. I recommend you read the novels in the order written to understand all the characters and the story line. C L Bevill has several books and novellas that are based on the supernatural and all are fairly well written stories. The Lake People novels would be good reads for a book club, lots to talk about with these books. If you enjoy supernatural (ie shape shifters, physics and telepaths) you will enjoy any of her books.

This was my first n last book from this author she had the makings of a good story ..too much detail of unimportant things realy drawn out and what's with the weird riddles ???? Can't stress how annoying and odd they were liked the charecters n the story strong possibilities but again.....to drawn out I would not be buying another book from her I gave her 2 stars because the storyline did have potential
