I'm really excited to review this one but, first things first, I was given a copy of this book by Bethany House publishers in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed below are mine alone. Now, on to the fun stuff. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect from this book because I had never heard of its author Cheryl Martin but the cover was beautiful and I was really interested in the subject matter, "trading comparison and competition for freedom and fulfillment". I decided to give it a shot and I'm glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed Cheryl's writing style. She's eloquent, but writes in a way that everyone can understand, humble but not self degrading. The chapters aren't long, but they do pack a punch. Each one is unique in it's own way and covers an aspect of trading comparison and competition and finding freedom and fulfillment. The first chapters focus on distinctly you blockers.Things that keep us from being distinctly us, who God intended us to be. She describes each blocker in detail and then shares how that blocker worked in her life to keep her from being distinct. She follows each chapter up with a series of five to six questions for the reader to work through in order to help them spot problem areas in their life and to work towards a solution. The second half of the book focuses on distinctly you builders. These are things you can do or character traits to work on to become the person God called you to be. Just like in the first half Cheryl shares experiences from her own life but she also uses biblical examples we can learn from. She also includes a series of questions for the reader to complete to know what the reader needs to work on and where they're doing well. I believe Distinctly You is an invaluable tool for women of all ages. I learned a ton about myself and how I let self doubt and opinions of others keep me from being distinctly me. I loved how Cheryl Martin didn't just preach and teach, she lived. She shared her own experiences and struggles on her road to becoming who she was meant to be. This book is NOT a one stop fixes all, this is merely a tool that shows us where we need to work harder on being who we are called to be.

The main point of this book is how to thrive in your God-given uniqueness rather than comparing yourself and competing with others. The author presents the material in two separate sections. The first section is titled “Distinctly You Blockers” which focuses on those things that prevent women from living out God’s purpose for them. Some of the things she mentioned include: letting others define you, a small view of God, distractions and destructive speech. The second half of the book deals with “distinctly you builders.” These are the positive side of the equation and are the things we want to cultivate in our lives in order to live out our God-given purpose. Examples of these topics include: let God define you, a big view of God, soul fitness and prizing wisdom. Each chapter concludes with a few questions to think through and nugget which is a tip or final word. The author uses many examples of her own life experiences and Bible verses to substantiate her points and give the reader something to relate to. I thought she was very articulate and easy to understand. The questions were valuable in taking the chapter topic to the next level and applying it to the reader’s life. I also thought the content was helpful and insightful. Here is one example of what I underlined in the narrative: “God never uses someone else’s talents and abilities as the plumb line for our achievement. It’s a great distraction of Satan to get us focused on what everyone else in the room has, what we don’t have (as I was doing in my freshman class), and what we think we need.” I thought this was a worthwhile book to read and would recommend it. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review.
