He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in performance (trombone) from Delta State University, Cleveland, MS, (1978), and a Master of Arts (composition) from George Mason University, Fairfax, VA (1994). He is married to the former Pamela Mosley of Cleveland, Mississippi. They have two interesting children: Carla and Robert, and three even more interesting grandchildren, Braden, Ainsley, and Jace.
