About the Author

Mickey Hart is best known as an integral part of the extraordinary six-decade expedition into the soul and spirit of music called the Grateful Dead. As half of the percussion tandem known as the Rhythm Devils, Hart (with Bill Kreutzmann) has transcended the conventions of rock drumming. Their extended polyrhythmic excursions have long been highlights of Grateful Dead shows, introducing the band’s audience to an ever-growing arsenal of percussion instruments from around the world. Exposure to these exotic sounds fueled Mickey’s desire to learn about the cultures that produced them. His tireless study of the world’s music led him to many great teachers and collaborators, including his partners on Planet Drum, which received the Grammy for Best World Music Album in 1991 (the first Grammy ever awarded in this category), and was #1 on the Billboard World Music Chart for 26 weeks. Planet Drum is one of twenty-seven recordings released on Hart’s WORLD series.

WORLD offers a wide variety of music from virtually every corner of the globe and includes Hart’s Supralingua (August, 1998), pairing his trademark array of musicians and instrumentation from around the globe with state-of-the-art technology, weaving it together with exquisite vocalizations. Along with Zakir Hussain, Giovanni Hidalgo, and Philip Glass, Hart composed a major drum production for the Opening Ceremony of the Centennial Olympic Games in 1996. An assembly of 100 percussionists performed the piece.

Hart has composed scores, themes, and soundtracks for movies, television, and home video. His credits include: Gang Related, Hearts of Darkness, Apocalypse Now, The Twilight Zone, Vietnam: A Television History, and The Next Step. Long a social activist, Hart appeared in August 1991 before the U.S. Senate Committee on Aging, speaking on the healing value of drumming and rhythm on afflictions associated with aging. Hart’s lifelong fascination with the history and mythology of rhythm is documented in two books: Drumming at the Edge of Magic (written with Jay Stevens and Fredric Lieberman); and Planet Drum (with Fredric Lieberman and D.A. Sonneborn), both published by Grateful Dead Books.
