Due Soldati by Derek Adam

Carter Avery is a by-the-book detective for Detroit and surrounding Wayne County. Known for his cunning and eagle eyes on the crime scene, he's assigned to decipher a string of unusual murders that will test his skill, and that of his new partner, Nick Farzo. In a city wrought with political corruption and organized crime, these two white-knight detectives will stop at nothing to put the offenders behind bars.

That is, until an outside influence delivers an ultimatum to the city of Detroit on the eve of Devil's Night, where a record number of arson outbreaks plague the city annually. When entire fire crews start turning up dead, and the women closest to Nick and Carter come under fire, these two soldiers may have to loosen their moral code to put their target down.

"Never in my career had I walked away from a crime scene. I felt like I was leaving a piece of who I was in that club when we left." What a great story! Twists, turns, murder, betrayal, every answer leading to more questions, humor, and of course a steamy scene or two! I couldn't put this down once I started reading! Carter Avery has a reputation among his peers. He's good at his job. He plays by the book. He's not on the take. He also likes to work alone. So, when bodies start piling up and he's given a partner to work with, he's not too happy about it. He doesn't trust easily. Everyone's corrupt in his mind - from street cops to politicians to business owners. Everyone has a hand in someone else's pocket. He soon realizes that he's stuck with him and that there's more to this new guy than meets the eye. When it becomes clear that they will have to do this investigation off the books, they'll need to trust each to make it out alive. Will he have to bend the rules this time? Nick Farzo had been a beat cop and was new to the homicide division. Yeah, he pulled some strings to work this case with Carter, but Carter was the best and Nick wanted to work the big cases. He, too is an honest cop, not enticed by the bribes and the perks offered to look the other way. When their murder case shows signs of being tied to gun-running and organized crime, he and Carter start digging around on their own. As the puzzle pieces start falling in to place, the number of people they can trust dwindles. The only thing good coming out of this investigation is their prime witness, Chantal. She's a game changer. Chantal hates her job at the strip club. Just a little longer, a little more money, and she can get out of here. With bodies found in the alley behind the club, Nick and Carter have her under protection as their prime witness. Normally, she'd hate it, but being protected by sexy detective,Nick Farzo, isn't all that bad. In fact, she could get used to this. That is, if she can get out of this with her life. I really enjoyed this story line. So many layers of corruption, twists and betrayals, and more! Nick and Carter make a great team! I'd love to see more books with them solving cases! I would highly recommend this one!

Due Accolades! Oh, WOW! What an all-out thrill ride this book was! I am a big crime thriller fan and hard to impress, but this story did the job superbly. The plot line was complex and engaging, full of pulse-pounding suspense, danger and intrigue, packed with action and twists and moved along at a rapid pace. The characters were multi-dimensional and came alive with rich depth and substance. I can't wait for the next book in the series from this dynamic writing duo! *I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
