In 1972, following the huge success of Run Silent, Run Deep, Edward L. Beach's second novel of submarine warfare was published to great acclaim. Like its predecessor, Dust on the Sea was lauded for its authentic portrayal of what it meant to be a submariner during the desperate years of World War II. Tense, dramatic and rich in technical and tactical detail, the book draws on Beaach's experience as a submariner in the US Navy to describe the commander and crew of the fictitious USS Eel as they battle overwhelming odds to destroy Japanese ships and save American lives. With no margin for error, the men withstand storms, depth charges and even hand-to-hand combat to defend their boat and themselves. Mistakes, as the title reminds us, result in the debris which serves as a brief grave maker for sunken ships: dust on the sea.

Most Helpful Customer Reviews
The author writes this novel having been there himself, his unique insight brings you back to the days when the United States fought back against its enemies without apology. A must read and a classic---they should have made this one a movie also
An excellent read for those that enjoy fiction that gives you a sense what American Submariners endured during WWII. Puts you aboard an American submarine in the pacific in the closing days of WWII. Tense action scenes and very entertaining throughout. Not quite a 'can't put it down' due to overly elaborate introspection on the part of the lead character. With this one minor deficiency, a classic of submarine fiction.
This is a great read but you really need to read the first book Run Silent, Run Deep to really appriciate it. RELEASE Run Silent Run Deep NOW!
