Overview

In this excellent psychological thriller, Bree Daniels (Jane Fonda) a lonely, tough, neurotic high-priced New York City call girl is trying to change her life and become an actress. John Klute (Donald Sutherland), a private eye from Pennsylvania, is looking for his friend who vanished mysteriously the year before. Before his disappearance, Klute's friend might have been a client of Bree's and is possibly still stalking her. Klute is both a thriller, a psychological drama, and a touching love story as Bree learns to trust and love Klute as she helps him find his friend. The film has impressive performances by Sutherland who plays Klute as a soft-spoken, solid and compassionate man. Roy Scheider is perfectly cast as Bree's manipulative, narcissistic pimp, and Charles Cioffi is good as Klute's boss, a man with secrets of his own. In an Oscar-winning performance as Bree, Jane Fonda is unforgettable. Her finely nuanced performance gives insight into Bree's motivations and her fears. Bree is both tough and vulnerable, sensitive, but unable to trust. Alan Pakula directs his cast with great skill, carefully developing each character while moving the story along to its very exciting and suspenseful conclusion. The extraordinary use of close-ups to reveal character -- by Pakula and his masterful cinematographer Gordon Willis -- is particularly effective, especially in the final scenes where Bree, in panic and deeply in fear for her own life, silently cries as she listens to a audiotape of the murder of a friend. The script, by Dave Lewis, also received a well-deserved Oscar nomination.
