I would love to write something wonderfully literary and intelligent, but that won't say what needs to be said. Wonderful book, PHENOMENAL movie! The characters were so real I could smell the sweat, feel the dust on my skin. I fell in love with Gus!! There is no issue encountered in life that he did not deal with, and comment sagely on. For anyone who hasn't seen this epic, I recommend it fervently!!! Well worth the time spent!

''My favorite role'', said Robert Duvall. Mine too! Tommy Lee is so real as Capt. Call. These are my wife's and my relatives (almost) who live in Texas and Miss. Their humor, honesty, devotion, values, and attitudes toward life reflect the reality of the people of that time and place. I fell in love with Diane Lane as ''Laurie darlin''', as Gus called her.

One of my all time favorite books became probably one of the best mini-series ever. Duvall and Jones both give their best performances. The supporting cast is excellent as is the direction. My only caveat is the character Blue Duck. So menacing in the book. But the casting of Frederick Forrest was a mistake. Yes, he's a great actor, but completely miscast. Also, whats with the black wig? Was it stolen from the &amp That Girl set? All the great Indian actors available and they go with a white guy in an ill-fitting wig? It doesn't diminish from the production, but it is distracting

This movie is the best movie in history. All emotions are in this and the journey from beginning to end is, just amazing. I truly don't think that there will ever be another one like this movie.

This movie is unbelievably wonderful! I am a huge fan of westerns, but there has never been any movie of any genre that can compare to this one. These characters are realistic; the story is realistic and believable. Like life, it is funny, tough and heart-breaking at times. And who wouldn't fall in love with Augustus McCrae!

This a must-have film for any Western fan.

Simply put, ''Lonesome Dove'' is the finest western ever filmed. It has brilliant acting, taut editing, a terrific score, and, most importantly, is faithful to Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name. There is bawdiness, grit, viciousness, and warmth in abundance here. It is a wonderful tale wonderfully told. Highly, highly recommended

Lonesome Dove is truly the greatest western of all time. The cast was a perfect ensemble. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones give tour de-force performances. Duvall is funny, wise and heroic as Gus Mcrae. Jones, a real Teas cowboy, burns up the screen as the intense and dangerous Capt. Woodrow F. Call. The interplay between the two actors are excellent. The supporting players were equally powerful. The Director, Simon Wincer, directs with a iron hand. The cinematography, music and sets are top-notch. The miniseries is also an authenic recreation of the old west in every way. A must see and own.

This is one of the few movies I have seen that lives up to the book... It's an awesome retelling of an Old West tale... I can watch it over and over and I never get tired of it

As a western historian and published author, I've been a fan of high quality western films for many years. I've yet to encounter another western film that surpasses Lonesome Dove in terms of acting, casting, character development, story line, and photography. It's one of those rare films which as you watch it hope it will never end. You're enthralled from start to finish.

I have worn the VHS of Lonesome Dove out.I love the movie and the folks who were in it.The dialog between the Capt and Gus is truly classic, but I also love Pea Eye and Gus' discussion on chasing buffalo.I think Tim Scott (Pea Eye) was wonderful, and he will be missed. If you like westerns, and haven't seen Lonesome Dove, you are truely missing out!

I don't know where to begin with this movie. It is such a great movie that it leaves you speechless. I have never encountered such a simply brilliant film, as this-Western or not, made for tv or made for Hollywood- that even comes close to the epic stratosphere that Gus and Woodrow F. Call only belong too. Only some one that has watched can understand the gravity of this movie. Nothing like it before, since, or will ever be. So watch it before your death, so you can figure out what life is like.

This book was one of my all time favorite books so when they made it into a mini-series I was a little skeptical. But I have to say hands down this is now one of my all time favorite movies as well!!!! The movie was done exactly the way the book was written. The casting of Robert Duvall as Gus and Tommy Lee Jones as Woodrow is perfect. They looked just like I pictured they would from the book. Also the soundtrack is wonderful. Definitely a must see and one for the permanent collection
