Overview

The third film in the original Star Wars trilogy, Return of the Jedi (1983) completes the story that begins with 1999's The Phantom Menace and attempts -- not entirely successfully -- to tie up all the loose ends. For its initial DVD release in 2004, producer George Lucas outraged some fans by digitally substituting the image of Hayden Christensen (playing the young Darth Vader) for British actor Sebastian Shaw, who originally was shown as the badly disfigured villain under the black helmet. This was one of several changes Lucas made to have the earlier Star Wars movies conform to the six-film saga. Of course, he had also enhanced Return's special-effects scenes in 1997 for a theatrical, VHS, and laserdisc re-release. This Limited Edition, in addition to including the 2004 DVD cut, offers the original 1983 version on a bonus disc, enabling nostalgic fans to enjoy the same Jedi they saw in theaters more than 20 years ago. Enhanced or not, this film isn't as good as the previous two. It was designed to appeal to very young viewers, what with the generous amount of footage allotted to those cuddly little Ewoks. But let's not kid ourselves: if you're a Star Wars fan, you have to have it. And being able to choose between enhanced and un-enhanced versions has to count for something.
