Earl of Darby is a poignant tale about Nicholas, a young man struggling with his dark past who tries to right the wrongs done not only to him but others. It is also the story of Hannah, a woman who must come to terms that her future will not go the way she envisioned. The attraction between these two is sweet and seeing them grow and accept their attraction was beautiful. Wynne has created a story filled with complex characters and beautiful dialogue that swept me away into a world I hated to leave.

Earl of Darby by Aubrey Wynne’s is the fourth book in Once Upon A Widow series or twenty first book in Wicked Earls’ Club series AND it is a Christmas story! I have read Aubrey’s work before so I knew that it should be good but in no universe did I imagine that her historical Christmas story would start with a suicide AND she pulled it off! We have Earl of Darby and he has not celebrated Christmas for the last five years, since his wife committed suicide on their wedding night that was Christmas Eve! As you can imagine he has lost all trust in anyone female so the only interaction he has with them is when they are his mistresses … and then we have Hannah who is in her first season and she is a lovely young miss and she befriends earl’s shy young sister after Hannah’s brother introduces Hannah to his best friend, the earl. The earl is supposed to keep an eye on Hannah and his own sister and of course he doesn’t think much of it until Hannah starts working her magic on him and everything changes … the road from revenge to new love is not an easy one and I admire how the writer spins the story. I welcome you into the world of Regency romance filled with holiday traditions … what bliss!

Earl of Darby was a great 5 star read and book 4 in the Once Upon A Widow series. We start out with a heartbreaking tragedy that left Nicholas reeling with all that was revealed. This tragedy has made a big impact on him and the fact he doesn’t celebrate christmas. He has built up walls and has avoided women as well. Hannah is getting ready for her first season. She has her sights set on one specific man, Gideon, however when she finds out he has eyes on someone else she is devastated. When her brother has to go home to be with his wife, he leaves her in the care of his best friend, Nicholas. When Hannah meets Nicholas she is instantly drawn to him. When Hannah catches the eye of someone very dangerous, things take a scary twist.. Can Nicholas keep Hannah safe? Will they give into their attraction? Overall I really enjoyed this read, I liked watching these two slowly come together. I really liked Nicholas and I wanted to see him happy again, Hannah was perfect for him. My emotions were all over the place. This was a Christmas love story with a twist and I loved it. This is a must read series and I look forward to reading more from this author.

This story started off with a heartwrenching scene and did not let up until the end. Nicholas, the Earl of Darby experienced a tragedy that was beyond compare when his new wife committed suicide on their wedding night. It sets the stage for how Nicholas lived his life for the next few years and how he was determined to find and get vengeance for what caused her death. Hannah Pendleton was determined to shine on her first season after being disappointed that her childhood crush had married. Hannah's brother had asked his friend Nicholas to keep an eye out for his sister, who becomes a friend to his sister Maddie. Hannah is very attracted to him and he too her. It had been such a long time since he had felt feelings of this kind. Such a wonderful story, that kept me turning the pages, anxious to find out what would happen to these two who really needed each other. Not to be missed! Lori D

Nicholas, the Earl of Darby is a cynic when it comes to love and women. He’s nurtured his rakish status over the years and with good reason: he’s hunting the man responsible for leading his first wife to commit suicide. He’ll not put an innocent in harms way. But upon meeting his best friend’s sister, Hannah, his heart has other plans. Hannah is a breath of fresh air and the more he’s around her, the more he wonders if she can rescue him from a lonely life. But his dreaded enemy, the same man he’s hunting to avenge his first wife, ensnares Hannah in a wicked trap. Can Nicholas save her before it’s too late to confess his feelings or will history repeat itself? To say I loved reading Earl of Darby is an understatement. From the very first page, my heart broke again and again for Nicholas. Such heartache wrenched sobs from my throat. Vengeance ruled his heart and it wasn’t until Hannah bright spirit broke through the darkness did Nicholas finally heal. The characterization of Nicholas and Hannah, as well as the minor characters, is incredible and I found myself growing attached to them all. The suspense and action surprised me but added such depth to the story, I found myself holding my breath as I whipped through the pages. The last part of the book shocked me but rang with historical accuracy. The ending filled my romantic heart with all the feel-good emotions. I hated when it ended because I wanted to stay, at least for a little while longer. If you’re a Regency romance fan, you’ll love Earl of Darby. Plenty of holiday traditions and foods pepper the plot to immerse the reader in Christmastide bliss. Highly recommend! Favorite Character/Quote: “Today, I feel like a new man. This is a new beginning for me. You are my chance to start again.” My Rating: 5+ stars

Earl Of Darby is a spectacular historical romance by Aubry Wynne. Ms. Wynne has once again provided readers with a well-written book populated with a cast of characters you can't help but love. This is a fairly quick read, perfect for those with limited reading time and is appropriate for all ages. Nicholas is the Earl of Darby and after being tricked into marriage and a traumatic wedding night, avoids marriage. Hannah is hoping to spend time with her brother's friend Gideon while in London. Nicholas and Hannah's story is loaded with drama, humor, spice, action and suspense. I enjoyed every page of this book and look forward to my next book by Aubrey Wynne. Earl Of Darby is book 4 of the Once Upon A Widow Series and is also a Wicked Earls' Club book but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I loved this story. Hannah is delightful and the Earl is just a man trying to protect his own heart and bring justice to his dead wife, and all of the lives that the Duke of Colvin has destroyed. It's hard to bring down a peer of the realm, especially a Duke. The problem is the Duke of Colvin has his eye on Hannah, while the Earl is losing his heart to her. There is lots of action and intrigue. Each character is written well and with their own level of personality and morality.

This story started out dark with a suicide and a mystery. Hannah was bright and full of hope with a crush on her brother Nathaniel’s friend Gideon and looking forward to going to London for her first season. I was surprised she would go so close to Christmas as the traditional London season is usually in the spring. She finds herself attracted to Nathaniel’s friend Nicholas, but it’s hard to get past her childhood crush. Also darkness surrounds Nicholas after what happened to his wife. I liked his sister Mattie and hope she has her own romance in a future book. I loved that both Hannah and Mattie loved to read as I do too. This was a funny, suspenseful, romantic Regency holiday romance.

Heartbreaking and heartwarming... Earl of Darby (Wicked Earls' Club) is the fourth book in the Once Upon A Widow series. This story has well-developed characters that are likable and relatable. The storyline is well written, with heartbreak, suicide, suspense, vengeance, redemption, and a sweet romance. This story engaged my interest from beginning to end. I loved this historical romance and would love to read more books by this author. I read and reviewed this book with no obligation.

On their wedding night, Nicholas realized he was not the first to have relations with his new wife, Alice. Then she tearfully told him she was pregnant after being raped. Because it would be his word against hers, her mother told her to remain silent and Nicholas’ mother agreed in order to get the dowry funds they needed after her husband gambled away a large sum of money. Nicholas was devastated. He had been used, betrayed by his own mother and his new wife. After a long ride on his horse, he thought about things and realized Alice had been a victim as well. He intended to confront their mothers and get the truth, and he and Alice would work something out. When he entered the room, it was cold. He found a note addressed to him on the table. Before he could read it, he looked up and saw his wife’s body hung from their four-poster bed! Nicholas, Earl of Darby, no longer celebrates Christmas since the death of his wife. Now he seeks revenge and justice for the harm that was done by a vicious man. His own heart had hardened and he no longer trusted women. Miss Hannah Pendleton is excited to attend her delayed first season. Her brother Nathaniel, Viscount Pendleton, introduces her to one of his best friends, Nicholas. He had asked Nicholas and Stanfeld to watch out for Hannah’s safety when they could since his wife is close to giving birth and he needs to be near if she needs him. When Nicholas sees the dangerous man who caused his wife’s suicide paying attention to Hannah, he knows he must protect her. Will he be able to keep her safe from the evil predator? Will he be able to let go of his painful past and allow himself to love again as he realizes his attraction to her? I really enjoyed this story and all the details and descriptions it provided. The characters were well-portrayed and the story line moved along at the perfect pace. Grab your copy and see how it all plays out for Nicholas and Hannah, who both deserve a HEA!

Wow! Not what I expected. When I read the warning about a suicide involved I was a little skeptical, but the author totally pulled it off! This story has everything. It has suspense, drama, romance and chivalry. It is the story of the Earl of Darby whose wife committed suicide on their wedding night. He is determined to see that no other young ladies become like her. This story was both suspenseful and romantic, but highly addictive. I would definitely recommend it. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The story opens with an unbearable scene. There is crying, sobbing, apologies, begging for forgiveness and anger. When all is said and done there is a suicide. The note left behind explained it all. Racked with guilt, Nicholas, Earl of Darby has spent the last five years cultivating his life as a rake. At the same time he also hired a former Bow Street Runner to assist him dogging the person to blame for the suicide, the Duke of Colvin. So far they could not formally charge the Duke with any type of crime. But Nicholas never gave up hope to bring the depraved scoundrel to justice. Present: Nicholas was with his two best friends, Nathaniel, Viscount of Pendleton and Gideon, the future Earl of Stanfeld at the Wicked Earl's Club. Nathaniel had a great favor to ask of his friends. His sister, Hannah Pendleton was celebrating her first season in London. Nathaniel asked Nicholas and Gideon to watch over his sister. Her chaperone is their Aunt Roberta/Bertie. One issue was his friends were rakes and he told them protect but do not overstep. He also knew than Hannah held a tendre for Gideon and tried to steer her elsewhere. Nicholas had no problem with the idea as his own sister Matilda/Mattie was coming out too. So it was decided for the young ladies to be introduced and spend the season together. When Nicholas first laid eyes on Hannah he was smitten. It had been many many long years since he felt anything of the kind for any woman. Hannah and Mattie hit it off and became the best of friends. Nathaniel noticed how Nicholas stared at Hannah and gave him a stern look. When Nathaniel and Nicholas told Hannah that Gideon had found love, she was sorely disappointed. But he was not betrothed nor married so she did not give up hope. However, meeting Nicholas was the first time she felt the stirrings of desire. As time went on Aunt Bertie filled in Hannah's family history. Who, what, where but most importantly why. Some was quite sad. It involved her mother, her father, Lady Darby and Aunt Bertie. What a mess. Also Nathaniel filled them both in on why Nicholas would never marry. Now that Mattie and Hannah were more comfortable going to events and had Aunt Bertie, Nicholas and Gideon to watch over them, they felt safe. One evening at a ball, Hannah felt too hot and needed fresh air. She saw a group of her friends enter the garden and decided to join them. Nicholas followed her they chatted and got to know each other better and then he kissed her passionately. Nicholas could not believe what he was feeling and doing. Hannah knew right then and there she loved him. The storyline is split: Nicholas' dedication to avenging the poor soul that committed suicide and the difficult romance between Nicholas and Hannah. When I finished the book to the last page I said "Awww". I did not want the story to end. The suicide victim was avenged, Nicholas forgave himself and he and Hannah had a bright future together. There is one aspect of this story that the suicide brings to light. It broke my heart to read it. You will understand the victim had little choice and that was a sad fact. When I read the beginning of the book I was so sensitized to the suicide that I could not read any further. Later I was glad I picked the book back up and finished it. It is worth the time and it made me feel good that everything came to a satisfying conclusion. I only wish there had been an epilogue to further what happened to Nicholas and Hannah. None the less, this is a good story.

The story is well written, entertaining and holds your attention. Darby learned on his wedding night that his new wife was not a virgin, had bern raped by a member of society and was pregnant. He left and later returned to find his wife Alice had hanged herself and left a letter of apology and named the man who had raped her. Five years later Nicholas is still trying to find evidence against the now Duke of Colvin in order to bring him to justice. This is where he meets Hannah and things start to change for him. He still seeks justice but also falls in love. There is a HEA but a lot happens first, among this Hannah being terrorized by the Duke. This is a great love story and i would recommend it as a great read.

Another beautifully written book!! In this book you have Earl of Darby [ Nicholas] who found out on his wedding night on December 24th that she was not a virgin and was pregnant. Darby was very upset and he left and when he returned and he found his wife had committed suicide and left him a letter of apology and named the man who had raped her and it turned she had been raped by a member of society Duke of Colvin. Nicolas had been trying to get evidence to bring him to justice. Then you Miss Hannah Pendleton who is looking forward to her season and seeing Giedion and then she finds out that he is married. She is bound and determined to break a few hearts of her own, she throws herself into the exciting and hectic schedule of a first season. During a Masquerade Ball she gets a note from a man telling her to meet him and he signed with a C. Well she thought it was from Nicholas but, it turned to be from the Duke of Colvin. Well he tried to rape Hannah and she fought him and screamed and then Nicholas breaks through the door and saves Hannah and the Duke of Colvin is arrested. Nicholas realizes that he is in love with Hannah and Hannah is in love with him. You really need to read this book to find out what happens and how it happens!! This was a different kind of Christmas love story!! This is a must read book!! I truly loved this book!!
