Poe is one of the most enigmatic of American literary figures, hugely influential but inexplicably weird. Brief biographical sketches often make him appear to have been a narcissistic, drug-addicted pedophile. Silverman's books shows readers a more balanced picture, including the experiences that shaped this bizarre genius. An enlightening read for anyone who's read and admired his short stories and poetry.

I have read 4 Biographies on Edgar Allan Poe and this one is, by far, the best one! Great detail and fascinating to read. If you want to get to know the real Edgar Allan Poe, read this book!

Good research, documented, and illuminating Poe's life. Only critique I would have to venture in accordance with Poe's columns in the media of the time would be the disjointed discourse of the writings and the add on disclosure of Poe's psych. troubled life.
