Set in 1892 to 1894. Books 1 to 4 takes University of Chicago lecturer Emily Cabot to the World's Columbian Exposition, to work a the famous Chicago settlement Hull House, to the Town of Pullman during the famous strike and to the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. During their adventures, Emily and her mentor Detective Henry Whitbread meet real historical characters like Ida B. Wells, Jane Addams, Florence Kelly, George Pullman and Eugene V. Debs.
