Bonjour! Escargot is a beautiful French snail who wants only two things:

1. To be your favorite animal.
2. To get to the delicious salad at the end of the book.

But when he gets to the salad, he discovers that there's a carrot in it. And Escargot hates carrots. But when he finally tries one—with a little help from you!—he discovers that it's not so bad after all!

A charming and interactive picture book ideal for picky eaters and animal lovers alike.

I highly recommend you read this book in a French accent, but even if you can’t put it off, this is a great read-aloud. The story is told in first person from the point of view of Escargot as he travels to the “beautiful salad, with croutons and a light vinaigrette” at the end of the book. Along the way, Escargot chats with the reader about … himself! You may be thinking, “Escargot seems like he’s a bit full of himself,” but he really is an endearing character. He wants so much for you to choose the snail as your favorite animal, he devotes almost as much time telling you about the positive qualities of snails as he does traveling to his final destination. By the end of his journey, you will see that Escargot has just as much admiration for the reader as he does for himself. Dashka Slater nails Escargot’s voice. Sprinkling the text with French phrases (“magnifique” and “oh la la” and “bon appetit”) and simple facts about snails, adds charm and additional layers to the story. Sydney Hanson’s illustrations are a perfect match. Escargot is outfitted with a striped shirt, neck scarf, and beret. Need I say more? I’m sure Escargot would be pleased if you raced to your local book store or library to check out his story. On your mark … Get set … Go!

Absolutely delightful, funny, adorable. Must be read aloud with a French accent for full effect. My kids insisted we buy it after reading it from the library. Probably my favorite picture book of 2017.
