Outside the Persian capital city of Shushan, 480 BCE
They were the night itself. First the darkness and then the blinding light of torches that hid the stars. The whinnying of horses, the crying of a hundred girls, the clashing of swords. The smell of flesh that has traveled a long way through the desert, bringing with it dust and sweat from far-off lands.
I was lying on my straw mattress when I heard the hooves pounding in the distance. It was much too long past the day’s end for a merchant’s caravan to be traveling upon the road, and the sound was not the slow plodding of oxen, elephants, or camels. It was the hard and fast approach of horses.
My hands started to shake. They did not want to obey me, but mostly they did, clumsily tying my head scarf behind my neck. My feet too were clumsy as I slid them into sandals and wound the straps around my ankles, all the way up to my calves. I pulled them tight. Because I knew. I knew why the hooves came.
Yet I did not run.
I no longer knew what would save me and what would lead to my death. I did not even know if the pounding in my ears was hooves striking the ground or the beating of my own heart. The horses were upon the village—I could smell dust rising from the road.
The door was yanked open and a shadow blocked the light of the stars. It would haunt me until I learned who had cast it. As it approached I heard not only heavy footsteps but also the clanking of armor. The king’s soldiers had fallen upon the village. And not just ordinary soldiers, of whom the king had hundreds of thousands, but the king’s most elite, highly trained force: Immortals.
A month before, the king had issued a decree that virgins from every province of his empire were to be gathered and brought to the palace at Shushan to serve in his harem. At the news, my cousin, Mordecai, had said, Soldiers are lazy, they save themselves for great battles. They will take only the girls nearest the palace. So he had sent me only a day’s journey from the heart of Shushan, to a village where a friend of his was willing to let me stay in the tiny servants’ quarters behind his hut.
As the Immortal came to hover over me, the rest of my cousin’s words rang in my ears: Though Xerxes is the richest man in the world, he will not feel rich until there is nothing, anywhere, that is not his. It seemed the shadow was Xerxes himself emerging from my cousin’s tales, hungry to add me to his possessions.
“Forgive me,” the Immortal said. No two words had ever terrified me so greatly. Forgive me. He spoke loudly, as though he spoke not to me but to someone else who was not so near. Perhaps to his god. He pulled me from my straw mattress, threw me over his shoulder, and began walking. My head fell against his armor.
His shoulder pressed up into my belly, making it hard to speak, but still I tried. “Please—” I did not finish—I didn’t want the words do not make me spend the rest of my life as a harem concubine to exist in the world.
He did not hesitate at the doorway of the hut. He had already asked forgiveness for all he would do.
As we approached the road I could hear girls crying, and I did not want to join my voice to theirs. I did not want to be one of them. I had cried while Xerxes’ soldiers quashed the last revolt of Babylon so brutally that for days the city smelled of blood. My tears had not saved my parents.
Instead I felt for the soldier’s dagger. My fingers wrapped around it and slid it from his belt. Lord, let it be me who will need to ask for forgiveness. I plunged it up the inside of the soldier’s tunic sleeve with all my strength.
The dagger was no match for his flesh. It slipped from my hand as if he had knocked it away. I tried again with the most ready weapon I had, one I did not have to grip. I sunk my teeth into his upper left arm. He grunted and threw me to the ground. He was only flesh after all, flesh I could run from. Though first I hastily searched the ground for the dagger. I had grasped it only briefly, yet without it my hands felt unbearably empty. Perhaps, knowing I was about to lose all I had, I could not bear to lose anything more. And for this I will never forgive myself.
What good did I think it would do me? What excuse can I offer?
I was only fourteen. I had made one mistake after another: I should not have put on my head scarf, I should simply have grabbed—not fastened and tied—my sandals. And most of all, I should not have been near Shushan.
The only thing I may have done right, though I did it too late, was run. I ran in the opposite direction of the road and the terrible sound of girls crying.
But I did not go far before learning the terrible strength of men. He yanked me by my tunic and I flew into him so hard the wind was knocked from my lungs. His weight fixed him to the earth as mine did not; the impact did not move him even a hair’s width. I knew suddenly that there had never been any use in stealing his dagger and stabbing him, nor in biting him. It was as though I had flown backward into a giant rock face.
As he dragged me toward the road and the pleas of the girls gathered there, I fought to gather enough air to speak. I wanted to tell him my cousin would reward him with gold darics if he would let me go, but my body would give up only enough breath to say, “Please.”
He did not respond with words. He tightened his arms—one around my ribs and elbows, the other around my neck. If I had not been choking from the soldier’s arm I would have choked on the musky earthen smell of men and horses. Sweat old and new, dust, dirt, the frothing around the horses’ saddles and bits. As the soldier brought me to stand in the road I could smell all of this but see little—the light of the torches was blinding. Yet for a moment I tried not to close my eyes. I wanted to see the soldiers’ faces, hoping to find kindness in one of them.
The arms released me and I stumbled backward, as if the light itself pushed me away. A new shadow came to stand before me. I quickly practiced my lie, practiced not allowing the voice in my head to falter. Sir, I must humbly tell you that I am already betrothed. My wedding is in two days.
“Sir,” I said. He tied a rope around my wrists so tightly I knew we had passed the point at which we could have pretended I did not want to run away. “I must humbly tell you—”
“You must humbly keep your mouth shut or I will close it for you.”
“I am already promised to—”
“Gag her,” the soldier ordered. Though he had already tied the rope around my wrists, he did not let go of it.
My eyes were adjusting to the light. The soldier had eyes whose centers were like perfect round drops of honey that have just begun to melt in the sun. Huge, beautiful eyes. He possessed no other remarkable features. Perhaps his eyes had used up all the beauty that one face is allowed. He had a long nose from which the rest of his features receded, as though he had thrust his face too often against the wind. Not even his beard of tight curls could disguise that he had little in the way of a chin.
“My cousin will give you gold coins if you will let me stay here.”
He leaned close. I tried to step back, but he yanked me forward by the rope around my wrists. “We will take you,” he said, his stale breath hitting my face like something solid, “and your cousin’s coins.”
From behind me a soldier said, “Enough, Parsha.” I was relieved to hear someone speaking on my behalf, but I did not like knowing that the soldier who had tied my wrists had a name. It made it harder to hold on to my last hope—that I was having a nightmare, the contents of which would empty back into the night when I awoke. Where would I have come up with the name Parsha? The soldier was not my invention. I leaned away from him.
“You follow orders, Erez,” Parsha replied. “My brother’s orders.” Yet he let go of the rope and turned away as I stumbled backward.
The soldier called Erez caught me. My back fell against his chest and his hands steadied me. Perhaps meaning to reassure me, he said, “We only want a hundred of you. When we put you in lines and walk through with torches it will be decided who is plain enough to stay here and who we will bring to the king.” He moved on and I had to bear my own weight again, a terrible burden I could not set down.
As the huts were ransacked, the girls on either side of me pressed closer. Whatever stood between the soldiers and the things they wanted was thrown upon the ground. It seemed that the lives we had lived up to that moment were trash to be gotten rid of. Yet the soldiers did us this one kindness. A shower of sandals rained over us like a gift from a Greek god—one who does not halt the terror but sends something to help you through it.
Beside me two girls struggled for the same sandal. The strap broke when neither would let go. Everyone knew that without sandals you could not walk upon the Royal Road once the sun has risen to the top of the sky. Not for long.
When the struggling was over, many girls were left with sandals of different sizes, straps stretched taut over one foot, the other swallowed by leather.
The soldiers had been watching, laughing, but now a few began to argue amongst themselves. I was glad for this, because their shouts drowned out the moans of the men who had been brave enough to fight for their sisters and daughters.
“This is not Athens,” Erez said. “You are stealing from the king’s own subjects.”
A soldier who looked like Parsha replied: “A few of these men tried to stand against us, and for this, they all will pay.” His voice was crueler than Parsha’s and it overflowed with confidence. He was in charge.
As we were pushed and prodded into lines, I kept my chin down to hide the necklace my mother had given me, a flower of gold foil petals hanging from a plaited gold wire. Crying girls fell against me on either side. When the soldiers began slowly moving through us, girls shrank from the light of their torches. At least, some of them shrank away—those without obvious imperfections. A girl beside me stepped boldly toward an approaching torch. Her cheek was deeply gouged, so deeply that with just a little more force behind the knife her tongue might have been visible. Had she pressed the knife to her face herself?
She began to sway upon her feet as though the ground undulated beneath her. I feared she would fall. The torches continued to move through us—illuminating and blinding and then receding to leave us in darkness until the next one came. I saw that the girl with the gash in her cheek was not the only one who was disfigured. Would these girls go free, or would they be punished with a fate worse than living out the rest of their days in a harem?
The soldier who looked like Parsha spoke quietly to some of his men while gesturing at us. Then the soldiers untied the girls with gashes in their cheeks, burns on their necks, missing fingers, and any other obvious injury. The soldiers pushed them away, back toward their huts. Though their wounds hurt my eyes, and surely some would return home to discover a father or brother wounded worse than they were, I wished I were one of them. Why had I not thought to use the soldier’s dagger to cut myself? I would have to use my teeth again. I will bite the side of my lower lip so hard I am too marred to bring to the king’s harem, I decided and brought my teeth down with all my strength.
My cry was so strange it did not seem that it could have come from me. It was loud enough to bring a torch so close that I felt as though the flame licked my cheek. I closed my eyes and watched the spots of blue that floated before me, wondering why the soldier holding the torch was silent. Was he considering whether to keep me for the king or let me go? I had nothing left to offer but what little pride remained to me. “Please let me go.”
He hesitated, then so quietly I almost did not hear, said, “I cannot. If any soldier who has seen the beauty of your face catches you going back to your home he will do far worse than bring you to the king’s harem.”
The voice belonged to Erez. If he would not help me, who would? As the torchlight moved on, all hope drained out of me.
Spots of blue continued to float before my eyes. I watched them as I was pulled forward by the rope around my wrists, away from the sounds of the villagers’ wailing. Soldiers were yelling at people to stay back. A man ran up beside us, calling to one of the girls, “I will not leave you. I will be beside y—” I heard the crack of a whip and looked back. In the torchlight, I could see the man bent over upon the ground. Farther back I could see the villagers gathered behind us, and soldiers taking water from the village well. Farther still, I could see the outlines of the huts in which we had been sleeping not long before.
Tears began to form in my eyes. I quickly turned back to the march. None of what was happening seemed like it could possibly be real.
When the sun finally came up though, I could clearly see the rope around my wrists. I started to cry. I hated myself for it but I could not stop. I was one of a hundred girls being driven like oxen east across the scorching desert plain by Xerxes’ soldiers, straight into the rising sun.

1. Esther’s given name is Hadassah, which means, “‘myrtle,’ a plant that only gave off its sweet fragrance when crushed” (page 9). In order to conceal her Jewish identity, she chooses a new name, Esther, which means “star” in Persian and is also derived from Ishtar, goddess of love, fertility, war, and sex. How is this change symbolic? In what ways does Esther embody the characteristics of both names?
2. When the Immortals come to kidnap Esther, she describes them as “the night itself” (page 1). Discuss how night and darkness become Esther’s enemies throughout the novel.
3. Do you agree with Erez when he tells Esther, “There is only one way to truly tame anything wild” (page 22)? What did you interpret his statement to mean? How does Esther’s “wild” nature both help and hurt her in the palace?
4. In the palace, physical beauty is often equated with goodness. How is this perception proven wrong throughout the novel?

3. Have your book club read Kanner’s first novel, Sinners and the Sea, which is a retelling of the story of Noah’s Ark from the point of view of his often overlooked wife. Discuss the differences and similarities between the two books, especially in the portrayal of their female main characters.

A Conversation with Rebecca Kanner
This is your second novel. How did the writing process differ the second time around? Did you find it easier or were there new challenges?
In some ways the process was the same for both novels. My writing process is basically just to drink a bunch of caffeine and see what happens.
There were a few new challenges but also certain advantages to writing a second novel. I wrote Sinners and the Sea: The Untold Story of Noah’s Wife, unsure if anyone other than friends and family would read it. That afforded me a lot of freedom and the writing came easily, but at times, I thought People rarely get their novels accepted for publication. What am I doing devoting so much time to something so impractical?
With Esther, I knew my publisher was going to look at it. This kept me from worrying about devoting so much time to it (in fact it took three times as long to write as Sinners and the Sea). But also, because I’d read lots of reviews of Sinners and the Sea, it was challenging not to let what others might think influence me. I was definitely harder on myself. Also, there’s so much more research material available about the time period Esther takes place in (the story begins in 480 BCE) that research became an integral part of the writing process.
How/why did you choose Queen Esther as the focus for this novel?
I’ve always been intrigued by the feat that Esther carried off—saving her people—and the intelligence that must have taken. I’ve been dissatisfied with interpretations of The Book of Esther which credit her beauty and the prodding of her cousin Mordecai for her achievements. I retold the story so that beauty and obedience weren’t her most important characteristics. I was inspired by looking at paintings of Anne Boleyn and reading descriptions of Cleopatra. While these women are widely believed to have been gorgeous, they were not actually pictures of traditional physical perfection. Their personalities, including both wit and charm, are what I believe accounted for much of their attractiveness. We have continued to mythologize their beauty as an explanation for their success (however short-lived it was for Anne Boleyn), instead of focusing on their intellects.
What was the research process like for Esther?
I read some books from start to finish (The Book of Esther and Purim and the Persian Empire) but for the most part, reading and researching were interspersed. Sometimes the best way to figure out what research you need to do is to start writing.
The characters of Ruti, Halannah, and Erez do not exist in the biblical version of the story. Why did you choose to add them?
Ruti serves as a feminine moral compass and a feminine connection to Judaism. It’s Ruti who tells Esther: “Our matriarch Sarah lived for one hundred and twenty-seven years, and you rule over one hundred twenty-seven provinces. Surely this is no coincidence. . . . Our God has not deserted us.”
Halannah is the female equivalent of Haman. She’s reckless, greedy, and ambitious. She exemplifies the jealousies and cruelty that result from so many women vying for the attention of one man. Ironically, it’s Hegai whose favor they should be currying. Upon first seeing Hegai, Esther understands that his support is vital. It’s one way that she’s smarter than some of the other women in the harem.
Erez arose organically as I was writing Esther. I think it would be unusual for a fourteen-year-old girl not to have any interest in love or her own budding sexuality. After being kidnapped and finding herself completely alone in the world, Esther is in that vulnerable state where connections can form very quickly. When Erez hears her praying in Hebrew and gives her a symbol of the Zoroastrian religion in an effort to protect her by disguising her as a non-Jew, she realizes she trusts him. That trust is the genesis of her feelings for him.
She eventually has to weigh her feelings for Erez against all she has to lose by following them. This is the sort of inner struggle many of us have as we make our way to adulthood. Exploring Esther’s struggle was one way of making her human.
Does your religion influence the stories that you tell and the ways in which you tell them? If so, how?
Jews have a tradition of seeking out answers and offering various explanations for things that are mysterious or unclear. This study is called midrash. My first book, Sinners and the Sea: The Untold Story of Noah’s Wife, offers a midrashic explanation for why Noah’s wife isn’t named in Genesis. In Esther, I offer my own explanation for why Esther delayed in telling the king she was Jewish. After reading some midrash in Torah of the Mothers: Contemporary Jewish Women Read Classical Jewish Texts, I was inspired to include what I think could have been Esther’s very dangerous initial plan to turn the king against Haman.
The events of Esther took place thousands of years ago, yet the story as you tell it feels fresh and relevant. How were you able to accomplish this?
Thank you. The more I inhabited the world of 480 BCE the more vivid it became. I came to see that many issues are timeless.
What was the most challenging part of writing this story?
Finishing it! And after finishing it, having to cut 40,000 words.
What would you like readers to take away from the story of Esther? What do you consider to be the most important message?
I hope that Esther will give people the courage to do things they fear. I really like the Georgia O’Keeffe quote “I've been absolutely terrified every moment of my life and I've never let it keep me from doing a single thing that I wanted to do.”
What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Read as much as possible. The best writers I know are widely read. I also recommend that once you start writing you join or form a writing group. Without a deadline, it’s sometimes hard to keep being productive, and other people can help you with any blind spots you might have as a writer.
When you submit your work for publication, know that you are likely to receive lots of rejections before you become successful. I kept reminding myself that Kathryn Stockett received sixty rejections before finding a publisher for The Help, which went on to be a bestseller and major motion picture. When your work is accepted or publication, all the hard work you put in will feel so very worth it.
What was the last book that you read and loved?
I’ve been reading a lot of mysteries because that’s what I’m writing now. When Lori and Julia of Twin Cities myTalk 107.1 interviewed me about Esther it was clear that they were very well read. I asked Lori for recommendations. One of the books she suggested was Luckiest Girl Alive. I’d actually looked at it before, but because the Amazon reviews were mixed I didn’t add it to my TBR list. It turned out to be a good character study and it was full of fashion, which is something that comes up in the novel I’m working on. I guess the lesson is not to judge a book solely based upon Amazon reviews.
What’s next for you?
I’m working on a thriller set in St. Louis, Missouri, and various parts of Minnesota. The cold is a factor, and it’s not hard to write about as there have been several bouts of ridiculously cold weather here in Minnesota the last few winters. Or, what I call “perfect writing weather.”

I really enjoyed this book up until just after Esther became queen. The descriptions were fantastic, the narrative and dialogue were smooth, and there was a lot of intrigue. After her show of strength before the soldiers among flying arrows (which was brilliant), I got bored. I stopped reading at Chapter 38, Dagger Training, because at that point the story just became stale. I know the author is working with a story that already exists, but it just stopped feeling original at that point. The book is good overall, its inability to hold my attention was simply because I lost interest in a story I have heard retold a dozen times. I'd like to thank the publisher Howard Books and Net Galley for a free ARC on a read-to-review basis.
I have to begin this review with saying the Biblical fictions are one of my favorites. We know the stories we read about in the books of the Bible don't contain every little piece of what happened but more of a synopis or summary of the book instead. I've read quite a few on the Book of Esther and was really looking forward to Rebecca Kanner's take on the story as well. While it may be based on the idea and concept of the story of Esther, the woman who would be queen, that is about all the Biblical aspects you will get from it aside from a quote from the Bible out of the book of Esther randomly at the beginning of certain chapters. Now keep in mind, we don't know the detailed extent to what happened from the time of Esther's capture until she is accepted as the replacement queen for Vashti under the rule of King Xerxes. I had hoped to see the same biblical themes carried through the story but was more of an afterthought than anything. The plot from Haman and his family was a subtly that didn't move the story in the direction it should have with more jealousy being placed on Halannah, not finding favor as Queen over Esther. While we know it would have been important to save her faith while living in the palace, in this story, Esther maintains possession of an object given to her by one of the soldiers she develops feelings for and would have been considered a pagan object by those of the Jewish faith whom Esther was raised firm to believe in and understand. The entire story was woven from what Esther does and who rallies behind her to help her rather than having faith in God to bring her to the place He ultimately has in store for her. If you take the Bible's story of Esther and this one, you can see there is quite the division between the two. I would have a really difficult time labeling this one a Christian based story since this one also deals with a lot of adult based themes more such as Esther's preparation to be queen and the night she must spend together with the King winning him over. There is a sexual undertone that you can't miss throughout this book. That being said, if you want a book that takes the concept of Esther, a young girl kidnapped to become queen your story, than this one is perfect. I would not recommend this to someone thinking it is a biblical version of the same story because it is not. I received Esther: A Novel by Rebecca Kanner compliments of Howard Books, a division of Simon and Schuster Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation, aside from a free copy of this book, in exchange for my honest review. As I stated above, this is not the biblical version of Esther but a more adult and modern version of the story over what the Bible clearly points out. While it does contain some scripture it is not to help guide or educate the reader along the way with the purpose behind the story of how a Jewish woman would rely on her faith in God to save the Jewish people and win the heart of the King in the process, not through seduction, but on her godly character and morals. I give this book a 3 out of 5 stars in my opinion.
In an "Author's Note" at the end of her absorbing new novel, "Esther," Rebecca Kanner briefly explores a few personal inclinations that made her want to write this book. I loved "Esther" (and Esther, too) already, probably by page 25, but here on page 380 Kanner confirms one of many reasons why: I've never been satisfied with the assumption that many come away with after reading the Book of Esther: the king made Esther queen because she was beautiful. With hundreds of beautiful girls for the king to choose from, a girl would have been foolish to rely solely on her beauty. That Esther is beautiful is something the reader never doubts. Kanner does an amazing job at all of her physical descriptions: Esther's beauty and how it only increases as she gains weight and curves during the near-to-year she is "prepared" for King Xerxes; the fantastically claustrophobic world of the harem, replete with wild animals, supposedly "tamed" eunuchs, and so many, many pretty, hopeful, powerless, alcohol- and drug-addled teenaged girls; images of violence and stunning cruelty; the brief, conflicted encounters Esther has with the King, and with others, too. One thing I always hope for in fiction: to be removed to another world. In Esther, I journeyed not only back in time but into the heart and mind of a woman who (and now is when you know the novelist really has succeeded) could have been me. Well, maybe except for the exceptional beauty part. Because while Esther is beautiful, she (like many of the Old Testament's chosen people, says Kanner) is not perfect. She is called out, repeatedly, for being angry, rash and reckless. She drinks too much and skips her prayers. Esther very quickly and cleverly reads people, decides (sometimes incorrectly) whom to trust, and begins to grow and wield her power before she controls it. She is warned, with good reason, by her platonic love (one of Xerxes' most valued soldiers) Erez, You cannot be dangerous to someone else without also being dangerous to yourself. Unwittingly, Esther is instrumental in, if not responsible for, the torture, maiming and death of many, some of whom are innocents. She also saves a lot of people, including herself, her King, and the Jewish people. And along the way she suffers. Suffers the loss of many pregnancies, perhaps at the hand of her nemesis, Halannah, King Xerxes' favorite concubine. Suffers King Xerxes' desire for said favorite concubine. Suffers, and enjoys, King Xerxes. What I hate most is how she is made to suffer indignity of any kind, and in Esther's life there are many indignities. Because when it comes down to it, she is powerless, like all women were (and some still are) powerless. A world of men (or perhaps, ultimately, one man)--men who are often not as intelligent as Esther, who are weak, cruel, and sometimes cowardly--keep her, decidedly, in her place. Except when they don't. This is what I love most about "Esther," and Esther. The eunuch Hegai says to her, early on in the story, You will have to learn to appear fierce and submissive at the same time. That is the task of womanhood, and you must master it while you are still a girl. Esther does what she needs to do. And writes, literally (in the novel) and otherwise, her own history.
Esther is a beautifully written retelling of the Biblical Esther. I really enjoyed Rebecca Kanner's vision of how Esther lived and what she was really like. She really brought the Biblical times to life and I felt was right there. What a fabulous read! 100 plus stars.
