ESV ILLUMINATED BIBLE REVIEW This is the most beautiful bible I have. The designs are perfect and the paper is high-quality material. I can write and my wife can draw with confidence because the paper is amazing and the details in the designs of each book of the Bible are tremendously well made. This is the perfect gift, and also a perfect tool to study and take notes in your bible. I did a Video Review. There you can see the beauty of this bible.

Crossway sent me a copy of the Art Journaling edition of the ESV Illuminated Bible. This bible is set up similar to the layout of a novel with space in the margins to add notes or illustrations. The detailed gold artwork reminds me of the beauty within the words the pages contain.

The ESV Illuminated Bible is a beautiful art journaling bible. My copy is hardback and it is extremely sturdy and heavy! The pages are cream colored, and while slightly thicker than a normal bible, you can still see the designs through the other pages. I feel like once you've added your own designs and writings ink could possibly bleed through the pages. I don't like how you can see it through the other side but that is just my preference! My only other complaint is that the designs don't have much space for you to say, color in, if you wanted. The only areas for adding your own journaling I feel like, is on the pages with blank margins. The scripture is single column with plenty of space on the margin for notes or drawings. The designs are truly beautiful, so beautiful I don't want to mess it up by drawing my own artwork in it! I especially like how the book title pages allude to that specific book, such as Daniel in the lion's den and the whale in Jonah! The gold writings and illustrations really bring the scripture to life and I think having space for your own personal notes or sketching is a great addition to this Bible! Thank you to Crossway for sending me this Bible for review purposes.

As you can tell from my previous reviews, I have been very fortunate and lucky to receive for review a lot of Crossway’s Bibles. This time I don’t have a study Bible to review, so it’s hard for me to comment on things like notes, if they don’t have any. When I reviewed the Story of Redemption Bible last year, I wrote that this was one of the most beautiful Bibles I have ever read. Should I be surprised that this Bible would now hold that title instead? Probably not, but wow, this is a beautiful Bible. It’s a real piece of art. Dana Tanamachi is a lettering artist/graphic designer who has quite an impressive resume (, and she has lent her talents with this Bible. Each book of the Bible has a beautiful illustration which captures the theme (Jonah has a whale, Romans has branches grafted into a tree) and throughout the pages of each book, there are also beautiful hand-lettered quotes of different Bible verses. I mean this in the nicest way possible, but it is a very common style that we see, but man do I love the aesthetic. And it’s great to see them paired with Scripture. The actual Bible itself is very readable, with nice wide margins that lets you write your notes (provided you don’t write over the illustrations!) Font is pretty big (9px) and the pages have nice golden gilding. In words it’s easy to describe its features, but until you have it in hand, are you really able to see how beautiful this Bible is. There is however one very obvious omission in this Bible: notes. There are no footnotes, commentary, study notes etc in this Bible. On one hand, this makes for a very streamlined reading experience where you are purely focusing on the Word. On the other hand, for a new believer, without some guidance they may not be able to properly grasp and understand some of the more nuanced comments in Scripture. Honestly I am so thrilled to have this Bible. I’ve seen people own several luxury Bibles and coming from a presupposition that all Bibles were supposed to be for “study”, I never understood the concept. But having owned this one, I can say this is one that will reallyyy help me enjoy reading the Word (not that I don’t already!) There are 3 variants of this Bible (I believe the main price point differential is whether it is hardback or leather backing). For the purpose of this review, I have been given the standard hardback one. I can see online it doesn’t cost too much more to upgrade to the leather one, and in this case I would highly recommend it. It’s currently on sale now for around $48NZD – $60NZD and I do think it’s a brilliant treat for anybody who wants a more unique and very beautiful Bible! Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this Bible as part of the Crossway Blog Review Programme. Check them out!

In order to review this Bible edition, I need to review two different aspects: (1) the Bible format itself, and (2) the artwork and space provided for personal artwork and journaling. First, the Bible format: I truly love the fact that the pages are single-column style. This is due to the fact that the outer margins are two inches wide. If there were two columns of print, the columns would each consist of about five small-print words Next, the print is fairly small. It's not smaller than the average Bible, but I still require reading glasses for this one. Finally, there are no cross references, or notes, or book introductions, or a concordance. THIS IS NOT A STUDY BIBLE. That's perfectly Bibles are not a requirement in order to be a legitimate Bible. Just know what it is and is not before buying it. Second, the Journaling aspect: Oh muh-word...I have two words for the color scheme: Ug - Ly! The covers are forest green (I love forest green)...but all the artwork is printed in gold, and the edges of the pages are also trimmed in gold. I find it all to be rather gaudy, to be honest. Next, I do like the fact that the margins are a whopping 2 inches wide! This allows for a lot of note-writing, artistry...whatever fancies the reader. Each book's title page, so to speak, is a full page of art, and the inspiration/meaning of each is explained in the back of the bible. Finally, all of the artwork font is in solid print, so there's really no room for coloring in the letters if that's what interests someone. Rating: I give this edition just 2 1/2 stars. It's really just kindof blah...and I appreciate good art. This art, though....well..... Disclaimer: I received this Bible free of charge from Crossway in exchange for my unbiased review of it. All opinions are mine, and I was not required to provide a positive review of it.

This is such an inspiring work of art created in collaboration with artist Dana Tanamachi along with other researchers and designers. Using the English Standard Version translation, this new Bible features pages of ornate designs and artistic lettering in gold print that coincide with each book of the Bible as well as smaller designs and images throughout. An index provided in the back of the Bible lists all of the images of the title pages and their meanings. Each page of Scripture offers sufficient margin space to take notes, make comments, add journal entries and create your own illuminations and designs. The artwork was inspired by late 19th-century and early 20th-century design, typography and motifs of the Arts and Crafts movement such as curved and winding florals. The cream-colored pages are the bare-bone Scriptures so no additional notes, commentaries or cross references are provided. The one downside: the pages are pretty thin (out of necessity or else the Bible would be way too heavy with thicker paper) so any darker drawings, writings or designs can easily be seen on opposite pages. But I’ve found in my own Bible journaling and designing that Micron pens and Prismacolor pencils using work the best and produce the least amount of bleeding. How to use this bible? Crossway suggests enjoying the beauty of the illustrations or using them as inspiration for your design work. This is such a beautiful and inspiring edition of the Bible that I plan to use in my reading, studying and journaling.

The first time I spotted the ESV Illuminated Bible my jaw dropped. Just look at it- it's stunning! Each of the designs spread throughout it hold meaning relevant to the theme of each book. Not only will you find a design for each new book introduction, but you'll also find beautiful designs spread throughout its pages as well. You will also find space for notes and lettering of your own, if you so desire. I will say that the pages are quite thin, so I'm a little nervous to take a pen to them. Something else to consider is that this particular Bible is a hefty one. It's great for your morning quiet time and keeping it on your coffee table. But, if you are in need of something to take to church or to a Bible study with your girls, I wouldn't recommend it. In addition, there are no cross-references or footnotes and there is not a concordance. If this is something that is important to you in your Bible reading, I would not recommend it. I really enjoy the ESV translation (it's actually my favorite), so I am especially enjoying this Bible. If you're looking to give a new translation a try, I highly recommend ESV- even if it's not this particular Bible. If you are unfamiliar with the ESV translation, it emphasizes word-for-word accuracy, literary excellence, and depth of meaning. The way Crossway's ESV Illuminated Bible is designed really does help bring the Word of God to life all the more. It may not be a great study Bible per say, but its beautifully done designs will certainly aid you as you reflect and meditate on His Word! "The unfolding of Your Words gives Light." -Psalm 119:130

* I received a copy of the ESV Illuminated Bible, Art Journaling Edition (Green) for review from Crossway. I love this Bible, the art works are AMAZING and CAPTIVATING. This is my pick me up Bible, when I'm in need of a verse to speak to me, I can go to this Bible and know that there is a Bible verse that's intentional where it's at to fill my need. I love that there are 4 blank pages at the back of the Bible (these blank pages are great to write down your prayers). Also in the Bible there are adequate pages for you to take notes as well. This Bible is PERFECT to gift to someone and it's a great investment for yourself. Grab yourself a copy !!!

With gold-coated page edges, thick creamy pages, and over 500 hand-lettered gold ink illustrations by Dana Tanamachi, this Bible truly is a work of art. The lovely illustrations are perfect for painting/coloring, the wide margins leave ample room for journaling, and the thick pages help prevent any writing from bleeding through. With a single column format and large 9-point font (which is large for a Bible!), the words in the Illuminated Bible are easy to see and read! The back of this Bible contains an index with each of the title page illustrations (the drawings at the beginning of each book of the Bible) along with a brief description of each book. These brief summaries would be so helpful for anyone looking to get a brief idea of what each book in the Word is about. And the title pages are absolutely gorgeous! Dana Tanamachi took such time and thought into each of these drawing, and they are beautiful! I received a free copy of this Bible from Crossway in exchange for my honest, unbiased review.

The beautiful Illuminated Bible happened to be on my husband’s Christmas list, and I’m so glad it was, because now I get to reap the benefit of getting to read and use it for my studies! The cover and each page is so artfully created - I love the illustrations and journaling pieces already in the Bible, and all the space left for us to add our own notes and journaling! The gold on each page is metallic and actually stands out on the page, plus there is a little of the gold print even on the pages without journaling illustrations, because the references at the top of the page, as well as the chapter numbers, and page numbers are in the same gold. Dana Tanamachi did a gorgeous job with all the illustrations, but I particularly love the full-page ones! My only concern is that I’m not sure the pages are thick enough for me to actually journal in without bleeding through, although since the Bible is already quite large I imagine thicker pages just couldn’t be a reality for this edition. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Crossway, but I wasn't required to write a positive review.

This Bible is gorgeous! It is a Bible suitable for sitting prominently on a coffee table as in the days of old (my grandparents had a HUGE Bible that had to have been 20 pounds on their coffee table for as long as I could remember). The cover is a very pretty color with gold floral designs all over the cover, spine, and back cover. The pages are edged in gold as well. The end papers have a subtle design in a nice olive green color…it’s a minor detail, but the details are what really make this Bible special. The presentation page and Title pages are also filled with elegant gold foiling that truly have to be seen to be appreciated. Each title page of each book has a gold design that somehow relates to the content in the book. Throughout the Bible, there are full pages of artwork with a key verse displayed, there are also small pieces of artwork and verses placed in the margins throughout the book, all in the elegant gold color. Because this is the Art Journaling Edition, there is ample room for Bible journaling in the margins. There are many pages with no artwork and it doesn’t take up the entire page, so there is more than enough room to fill this Bible with your own notes and creations. The pages are a bit thin, I wish they were a little bit thicker as some forms of media may bleed through. There is an index of the title pages in the back of the book, describing the artwork for each title page and how it relates to that book of the Bible. This is the only special feature in this Bible. The Bible itself is a single column English Standard Version. This translation is thought to be one of the most literal translations of the Bible. It is easy to read and one of my favorite translations. If you are looking to purchase a gorgeous Bible for reading or journaling, or even a gift, this would be perfect. It is fairly basic in its features but goes above and beyond in its presentation. I love this Bible and highly recommend it! My Rating 4.5 stars I received this Bible from the publisher to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

God’s word is truly beautiful. The ESV illuminated Bible beautifully underscores and magnifies the glory of God’s living word. This book is for anyone who appreciates gazing on the beauty of God’s Word, who loves meditating, chewing over and feasting on it. Illuminated Bibles are not a new phenomenon. This ancient tradition goes back to the early fifth century. The purpose of illumination was to draw attention to particular verses/promises that beautifully summarised the main gist of a particular portion of Scripture. This Bible continues this ancient tradition. The hope is that ‘the added ornamentation and illustrations will draw the reader’s eyes to the beauty of the Word of God itself, stirring up affection for the Creator and inviting deep reflection on the narrative and truths of Scripture’. Although it’s a Journaling Edition, my wife and I have been using this Bible in our devotions. We are often stunned by the beautiful illustrations that point away from themselves and point to God’s glorious word. We think that Crossway has successfully achieved their aim of drawing ‘the reader’s eyes to the beauty of the Word of God itself’. Also, this Bible gives you enough space to jot down your prayers and thoughts in the margins. Its pages are thick enough to write on without worrying about ruining the book’s aesthetic appeal. In short, I highly recommend this book. If properly used, t could help you enhance your Bible reading and prayer life. Also, it would make a very good gift. I thank Crossway Publishers for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This Illuminated Bible is so pretty. The cover looks elegant and I really like how the text isn’t split into two columns, as is standard in most bibles, and is presented in paragraph style. I also like that the pages are a creamy, rather than stark white, and are edged in gold. Perfect for those who enjoy note taking or journaling while reading their passages, the wide margins are ample and the illustrations, illumination, and lettering make this a wonderful family heirloom. I don’t have a lot of experience with the ESV, but it is my artistic daughter-in-law’s preference and I am giving it to her for a gift. This hardback isn’t necessarily a take-it-with-you bible, but it makes a wonderful at home bible for worship time. The look and feel of this Bible is very similar to the ESV Story of Redemption Bible also published by Crossway Publishers. It has the same cream colored pages with gold edging. The main text is in black ink but the chapter numbers and Titles are in gold. There are also multiple verse illustrations and other illustrations in gold throughout. My only complaint is that the paper is a bit too see-through. The margins are large enough to give plenty of space for any note-taking you desire. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. There is a single ribbon marker to hold your place. When it arrived in the mail the paper cover was mangled from the shipping but since the design is etched into the hardcover as well I probably wouldn't have kept it anyways. This Bible has the look and feel of a more traditional or heirloom Bible. The ornate illustrations give it an appearance of antiquity worth being prized. With the rise in popularity of Bible journaling, this Bible blends ageless art to enhance your study. I really love the classic beauty to it. The ESV Illuminated Bible is a journaling bible but is not considered a study Bible, meaning you get the full text of the Bible but there aren't any additional study notes. It's intended for you to jot your own notes down and/or add your own personal illustrations. It's up to your own personal preference which type of Bible you prefer and how you utilize it. In my opinion this is a beautiful Bible and one I'd easily recommend to those who are into Bible journaling, verse illustrating, or just like a super beautiful Bible. *I received a copy of this Bible from Crossway Publishers. Thoughts and opinions expressed are mine alone.

Recently, I was offered the opportunity to review the ESV Illuminated Bible. I love bibles of all kinds but I'm especially fond of the journaling bibles. When the Bible arrived it was a bit heavier than I thought. That's due to it being a hard cover bible. I prefer a soft cover bible, because they are lighter and easier to tote, but this cover is absolutely gorgeous! The inside is filled with beautiful illustrations in gold that you can color, or you could just leave them as they are. There are also margins on each page for you to add your own notes or draw if you'd like. Even the back cover is a thing of beauty! I love how they included a scripture verse on the back. All in all I was extremely impressed with the ESV Illuminated Bible. From the front cover to the back it truly is a work of art. I enjoyed the fact it is in the ESV translation, I enjoy several translations but when I'm journaling I want one that's easier to read and understand. I love how it comes with pictures already drawn, that way you aren't just looking at a blank page, which can be intimidating. The margins are generous so if you want to try your hand at drawing, or if you're like me and an avid note taker there is plenty of room for that too. The ESV Illuminated bible is a terrific value and would make an excellent gift for anyone on your list! * I was provided a free copy of this book. All opinions expressed above are my own.

This Bible is beautiful! The hardback, cloth covered board is embossed in gold flower detail, and throughout the text on the pages you will find verses in the side margins done in gold lettering. The book titles are done on a page with gold detailed artwork. The text is English Standard Version, which is easy to read and understand. Although lovely, this Bible is pretty simple. That is one thing I like about it. Not much there to distract you from paying attention to God's Word. It contains a basic introduction in front and an index of the title pages in the back. There are wide spaced margins on the side for your own artwork or doodling. It also comes in a hard case box for protection. It is a bit heavy for carrying, but would make a wonderful Bible for home study and reading as a family. It would also make a very nice gift for someone you love. I received a copy of this Bible courtesy of Flyby Promotions and Crossway. I was not required to review positively and all opinions are my own.

I don't think I've ever own a more beautiful Bible than The Illuminated ESV Bible from Crossway. I'm not going to compare the different versions or translations, but the presentation and ease of use of this Bible only. As a designer, I love the thought and creative interpretations of the artist, Dana Tanamachi illustrated in this Bible. With the gorgeous gold ink illustrations that at times span a full page, it's a delight when one is reading the Bible, and see the verse highlighted in these illustrations. In terms of the layout, I find the font of a decent size, and particularly like the space on the edge of the page for users' own personal notes and sketches. Personally, I'm not sure I can do it! It's so pretty that I don't feel like I should mess with it. However, I think instead of color, I'll use my thin black ink pens to keep the contrast with the gold ink. The quality of this Bible is top-notch. The navy clothbound (also available in hunter green and burgundy red) gives it a beautiful touch of homeyness, and not too refine that we need gloves to touch! The sturdy cardboard slipcase is also clothbound and be sure to keep the Bible itself in good condition. In all, I'm very satisfy with this Bible. It'll make great gifts. Perfect timing if you ask me as the Christmas season will be upon us shortly! Disclaimer: I received a copy of this BIBLE from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, and have not been compensated for this. This is my honest opinion.

In addition to my normal book reviews, with the approach of the holidays, I hoped to highlight some other products that would make good gifts for those hard to shop for family and friends. The ESV Illuminated Bible was presented to me at just the right time. And I’m giving one away to one of my blog visitors so be sure and stay tuned to find out how to enter. A bit of an anecdote for you before I show you this gorgeous Bible. This week, I checked my mail and in my box was a scrap of paper. The postman had written on it that I had a package in the office but it had opened in shipping and could not be scanned. I took the paper into the office and handed it to one of the workers. He was a little surprised and said, “Is this what they gave you?” I told him I thought they just wanted me to know the package was opened. A few minutes later, the guy brings my package to me and says, “That looks really cool. I peeked at it.” I have to agree, it does look really cool but when I opened it, it became even more so. The wide margins for notes along with beautiful illustration and graphic verses is ideal for either journaling or taking sermon notes alongside the text. There’s an index of all of the artwork at the back of the Bible as well. The ESV Illuminated Bible comes in a sturdy cardboard sleeve, making gift wrapping easy and quick. But really, with that cover, it doesn’t even need further gift wrapping. If you have thought about Bible journaling or know someone who is a visual learner, this Bible is the perfect gift—one that contains the greatest story ever told. Disclosure statement: I receive complimentary books for review from publishers, publicists, and/or authors, including NetGalley. I am not required to write positive reviews. I liked the wording in this ESV version and with the nice wide margins and thick cream colored pages to journal in, I will truly enjoy using this beautiful Bible. With over 500 elegantly hand-lettered gold ink illustrations this Bible is just so elegant. A beautiful edition for gifting! I was gifted a copy and my review is voluntary...
