A Promise Can Follow You To the Grave…

Claire Templeton is drawn to the majestic beauty of the California Redwoods in the hopes of capturing an unexplained phenomenon on camera. What she doesn’t expect is to run into her first love, Jed Lafferty, the boy she worshipped as a child, the man she’s never been able to forget.

Carefree, fun-loving Jed doesn’t believe in fate, preferring to make his own luck. But when he runs into the little girl who used to follow him like a shadow, now an irresistible woman, he can’t help feeling the odds are turning in his favor. Letting Claire walk out of his life the first time might be his single biggest regret. But when strange gifts and cards left for Claire turn sinister, it’s clear someone else from her past isn’t ready to let go . . .

To run into the biggest crush of your younger days, and to find out, he is single, hotter than ever, and a nice guy, and you both are going to be in the same location for a few days - sounds like fun, right?! But then, you run into your ex, and not only one, but another, and... Things get rather uncomfortable and awkward after a while. And to make matters even worse, it seems one of the old flames is still holding on a torch for you, and rather odd, stalker way, leaving you messages and gifts that makes the situation not only creepy, but dangerous as well. Even though the story has a disturbing mystery to be solved, mostly the tale has a focus on Jed and Claire, and their life goals, future desires, and possibility make a relationship work between them. The give and take is fascinating, and the topics and concerns they have are very much life like. The sacrifices that one has to make when in a committed relationship, career, fun, and stable living, all things people in their adult years ponder on. As they try to get Claire's job assignment fulfilled, the mystery of the stalker resolved, and are hiking and enjoying the California redwood forests, they talk about life, get to know each other again, and fall for each other. But is it enough, when their future goals are so different? I found the story fascinating on many levels. I enjoyed the characters, their honesty, openness, and candor. The California coast the author painted in my mind was intriguing in its beauty, the small town with its folks humorous and inviting. The romance felt real and down to earth, and the conflicts they faced actual and legitimate. The mystery was tense, fearsome, and chilling. The Bigfoot and the Bigfoot believers gave something to smile about. I definitely recommend this book, and the author's easily flowing way to tell an alluring tale ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side

Jed Lafferty has decided to go off the grid for a while and explore what the world has to offer, which takes him to California to camp and hike in the Redwood Mountains. Before heading to his camp spot he stops in at a local diner for a bite to eat, and gets the surprise of his life. He has often wondered what happened to the little neighbor girl that use to follow him around mesmerized by his every move. Her family never stuck around in one spot for long and moved away, and he never saw her again... until now. Right there in front of him is little Claire Templeton, but she isn't so little anymore, she's grown up to be a strikingly beautiful woman, and now he is the one who is mesmerized... Moving around a lot as a child has turned Claire Templeton in to somewhat of a nomad, she travels the country in her little camper capturing photos of the most beautiful locations the world has to offer. She often sells her photos to magazines to fund her travels, and her most recent journey has taken her to the Redwood Mountains in hopes of capturing photo evidence the mystical Bigfoot. This story could really draw attention to her work and help her earn some merit in the photojournalist world. Before heading out to her camping site, she decides to stop at the local diner for a bite to eat, and winds up coming face to face with the boy that captured her heart so many years ago. Seeing Jed after all these years is a dream come true, she has often wondered where life had taken him and also wondered if he was just as handsome now as he once was...and she finally has the answer to that question. He is gorgeous and he just so happens to be heading in the same direction she is, so they decide to make it a reunion trip of sorts. But their trip hits a few unexpected bumps, someone isn't so happy about Claire sharing her trip with Jed, and they will stop at nothing to put an end to their happy little reunion. This spine tingling story captured my attention right from the start, and had me instantly addicted and filled with an insatiable urge to know more, so much so, I ended up having a little late night reading marathon just to finish it... and I have to say the loss of sleep was TOTALLY worth it!! Ms. Gallant's inventive story line, and well crafted characters pulled me in and kept me well entertained until the last page was turned. Definitely one of the most surprising and impressive first reads that I have had in a long while, I am looking forward to a return visit to this series very soon!! If you like your romance stories laced with a little thrilling mystery, then this just might be the perfect read for you, this suspenseful read is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat the whole way through!! Highly recommend it!! ARC requested through NetGalley and kindly provided by Kensington Books in exchange for a honest and unbiased review.

This is a suspense filled story of broken promises, unnerving threats, and an old love that flames again. Jed and Claire knew each other as kids and were fast friends. When her vagabond father moves the small family again, Claire is sure she'll never see Jed again. Now after almost 20 years she runs into him in a small diner deep in the Redwood Mountains. Both are set for camping in the mountains so they decide to spend the time together. As their relationship begins to blossom, threats against Claire start popping up and they are both determined to discover who exactly is behind them and put an end to it. If you enjoy your romance tinged with mystery this book is perfect for you. It will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend it.

This book was very slow paced. I became bored and lost interest. I barely managed to finish it. Least liked in the series.
