Excessive Sweating of the Palms
Palmoplantar hyperhidrosis is a very debilitating problem, affecting one to three percent of the adult population in the United States. It may be associated with hyperhidrosis of the underarms, but is typically isolated to the palms and feet. The reason it is debilitating is that we regularly use our hands to interact with others, whether at work or in our social lives: we hold hands with loved ones, we shake hands in business meetings, we use our hands to take care of patients as doctors or nurses, we use our hands to prepare food and to serve food, and so on. Hyperhidrosis of the hands creates social phobias for most people who have it and it rarely goes away on its own. People either learn to live with it and find unique ways to hide it, or they get treatment for it. Our goal in this book is to highlight all of the treatment options for palmoplantar hyperhidrosis: oral natural herbs, oral prescription products, topical products, topical prescription products, iontophoresis, Botox therapy, endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy.
