'Extreme Circumstances' is a really good read when you're visiting your hairstylist for that weekly or bi-weekly visit and would like something hot to read while you're under the hairdryer. As a quick read, I totally got the excitement of the author when she was crafting this story. With that being said, even though the main story was about Chanel and her discussion to stay with her boyfriend, Donnell, as a reader you are more drawn to Chanel's good friend, Janai's story because of all the drama associated with her 'circumstances'. There were several spelling and grammatical errors within the body of this story but if you are interested in being part of a wild and fictional situation, then ¿Extreme Circumstances¿ is the book for you!
Mild-mannered Chanel finds herself wondering where her five year relationship with boyfriend Donnell is going. She loves him and is ready to take that next step and jump the broom. Donnell, on the other hand, is content with the current state of their relationship. If it's not broke, why fix it? But every woman has her breaking point. What will come of their relationship with Chanel reaches hers? For Janai, Chanel's best friend, one man is simply not enough. Her boyfriend, Jordan, is your average joe working a 9-5 to provide a roof over their heads. A place to live is nice, but Prada on her back and Coach on her arm are better. If Jordan can't give her those things, then another man will. What's done in the dark always comes to light. What will Janai do when the light switch is flipped on? Newcomer Cereka Cook follows the lives of two woman as they face extreme circumstances, whether brought on by themselves or at the doing of someone else. The narrative is jerky. The book flips and flops back and forth constantly between Chanel and Janai in a manner that is anything but smooth. Page breaks would have helped but did not come into play until page 56 at which point it was too late and still did not help as readers continue to be tossed haphazardly from one character to another. Providing some back story and more details about the characters as well as focusing on the voices of the two main characters would have definitely enhanced the story. In addition, there were a few editing issues. All in all, Extreme Circumstances is a decent read a down the middle of the road read, no veering to the left, no veering to the right and no real highs. I had hoped for some more umph. That said, I would still give this author another try.
Chanel is ready to settle down and marry her long-time boyfriend Donnell. However, Donnell has different plans. Not ready to settle down or turn in his 'playa' card, Donnell has no problem sleeping around with other women as long as Chanel doesn't find out. Chanels knows something is not right, but instead of following her intuition, she is determined to stick it out with Donnell. But what happens when Chanel catches Donnell in a situation that he can't lie his way out of? Janai, Chanel's best friend has a good man at home but she is never satisfied. Janai uses what she got to get what she wants but what happens when one of her boy toy's wives comes after her?? Extreme Circumstances, the debut novel by Cereka Cook is an engaging story with interesting characters. Chanel appears to be the main character but you find yourself caught up in Janai's story. I finished this book in one day!! Join Chanel, Donnell, and Janai as they find themselves in situations with 'extreme circumstances'. Reviewed by Shay C of PeoplewholoveGoodBooks
