Hockey is one of the fastest games around. It's always fun to watch the little kids learning the game trying to coordinate skating and stick handling, trying to stay upright while passing the puck. Author Nick Fauchald and illustrator Ronnie Rooney create a fun story for younger readers. Instead of this being an instruction book, it is a simple story that puts the reader in the action. The author explains how the reader is a member of the team the Penguins, who are competing against the Seals. The noncompetitive nature of the writing provides a pleasant story of competition and good sportsmanship. Another plus is the cross gender writing, with both teams having male and female players. The simple but colorful illustrations are easy on the eyes and while photographs in most books can re-create the action, the softness of these illustrations makes it perfect for younger kids. Throughout the pages factual balloons explain details of the sport. A good addition to any elementary or public library young reading collection.
