Falk begins as does so many Conrad books, with a group of salty travelers gathered together and swapping seas stories. It occurs to me that Conrad’s uniquely observant narrative style was no doubt learned, practiced, and honed to perfection in the slow, monotonous long watches at sea where a keen mind will find a story and a way to tell well a story in the slow pace of a mariner’s life.
