Overview

Fields Of Gold by Marie Bostwick

This would be easier if I were writing about someone else. Then I could change it, fatten up the thin parts and leave out the dull ones, turning them twice like frayed collars and cuffs, making them over into something more romantic than they really were, but then the remembering would be neither so painful, nor so sweet. I suppose you can't have one without the other. . .

Evangeline Glennon knows plenty about life's highs and lows. Still, she feels lucky, surrounded as she is by people who care deeply: Papa, who's never lost his Irish brogue or the twinkle in his eye; endlessly practical, generous Mama; and steadfast best friend Ruby. Romance would be too much for a girl like Eva to expect. Then again, love has a tendency to find those who aren't looking for it. . .

Out of a clear blue sky, a dashing young aviator makes an impossibly gentle landing in Papa's Oklahoma wheat field. After taking her up in his plane, "Slim" leaves Eva with an exhilarating new perspective--and an even more precious gift that changes her forever.

But that's only the beginning. The world is changing, too--and only the strongest in body and spirit will weather what is to come. Now, while tracing from afar the progress of the brave young barnstormer she knew so briefly, Eva stitches her heart and soul into intricate quilts whose images take extraordinary form from the heartbreak and joy of parallel lives. . .

"A lyrical, lush, and lovely novel from a clever and talented new writer." --Jane Green

"A gripping, heartwarming story. . .complete with fascinating characters and a page-turning plot." --Dorothy Garlock

The story is so honest and uplifting, you can't help but be compassionate about all of the characters. Even through grief and somewhat torment of the heart, every page is turned begging for more. I love this book, and I can't wait for another book from Marie Bostwick

The stars twinkle brightly against the sky, like sparkles tossed onto a dark blue blanket. The moon hangs eerily amongst the stars, casting a glow down upon the earth. Below the stars, and under the thickly woven tree branches, a girl lays on a stone slab decorated with writings of an unknown language. A group of hooded figures gather around. "She's my daughter. I will do it," one says lowly. The others bow before scurrying off into the forest. The figure draws his hood back, and he wields a dagger, its silver blade reflecting the moonlight. "Father," a small voice whispers. "Why do you look so sad? It is my destiny to fulfill. In order to save our people, l have to die." A strangled sound emits from the man's throat, and he collapses down next to her. "I can't do it," he says. "I can't kill my daughter." The girl sits up, her red hair spilling in waves over her back. She looks up at him with clear blue eyes. "Father. I must save our people. The moon requests it so, or you will be destroyed on the first moon of summer," she says. He stands up, and she lays back down. He raises the dagger once more, and plunges it into her heart. She rasps for a few moments before going cold. The man yells to the sky, and the yell turns into a beastly howl, emitting anguish with its every note. A wolf like creature bounds away with the small girl on its back, and the stars seem to dim against the moon. Another howl is released, shattering the stillness of the night. As the creature disappears, and the innocent girl's blood seeps into the stone slab, the moon begins changing. The color begins to darken, the white being replaced with red. Before long, a blood moon hangs maliciously above, the stars shrinking away.

It is so easy to rush through Fields of Gold, but don't or you'll miss the richness of the language, the intimate details of the lives of the characters, and the nuances of the plot. I loved every minute of Fields of Gold and eagerly await this new novelist's second book.

Why did it have to end? What a great story! I loved all the characters, they just seemed so real to me. The setting really was small town America - with all the happiness, struggles and joy of that time and place. The plot kept me very engaged. It was hard to put down (if it hadn't been my turn to carpool I probably wouldn't have) and the story was over much too soon. Read this book! You won't regret it!

"Its goin to be a great experiance Ryan." My mom says. "What about my friends? My girlfriend? I cant leave them behind!" I said. My sister rolled her eyes and said. "Your girlfiriend must be blind beacause you dont have the looks." I rollemy eyes back. "Ryan you will make new friends." Dad said. "Yeah! Now go up and start packingthe moving trucks will be here in the morning." Mom told me. I ran to my room and packed up everything. My sister came barging in. "Do you have an extra box for my Monster High Dolls?" She said. I shook my head. And sighed. She walked out. ***** it was night time so I went in my bed and fell asleep.
