Fiery Secrets by Stephanie McCall

Dr. Grace Taylor's heart grows more fearful every day. She thought coming to Hart Hill, Tennessee from Boston would ensure a new life for her and her son Jacob, away from her cheating, abusive ex-husband. But Grace's sullied past means she has to fight for sole custody. Meanwhile, Jacob's anxiety has made him fail state tests, despite his intelligence. He's attending summer school and in danger of repeating fourth grade. Grace has no idea how to help. She needs divine intervention, but she never expected it to embody a second chance at love.

Chris Anderson swore off mainstream teaching after a classroom tragedy left scars on his body and heart. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder has kept him closed off from everyone, even those he loves most. Chris is determined to create a life of safety at any cost, even though that life is lonely. So he's shaken at how quickly he bonds with Jacob Taylor, and terrified of the attraction he feels for Jacob's mom.

Slowly, the couple begins to build trust, and believe they could heal with each other's help. Yet, their fiery secrets threaten to ruin that chance-unless they can relearn trust in the ultimate Healer.

Dr. Grace Taylor, a pediatrician and single mom, needs to recover from situations and consequences from her past. Her young son, Jacob, struggles with his own problems. Add Chris Anderson, a teacher/ tutor with his own set of distresses along with other involved characters to a blossoming relationship as trust, hope, healing and a possible future ensue, and Fiery Secrets starts to really heat-up (pun intended). A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS: I can usually tell from the first page or two if I will like the book and author. As a new author, Stephanie McCall took a novel approach (again, pun intended). Her characters and their struggles are actually very relevant in today’s world and were treated with knowledge and respect. The length of the book as well as the believable outcomes were also very well done. Even the title was relevant to the development of the plot. I am a little surprised this is her first novel…I truly hope she continues to write. As a side note, I enjoyed the set-up of the book with the sturdier cover, the art design continued throughout the chapters, and even the whiter pages with the chosen font style. (I tend to enjoy books thoroughly from cover-to-cover.) RATING: 4 (out of 5) pennies *I received a complimentary copy of Fiery Secrets from BookCrash and HopeSprings Books for my honest review*

I found this book to be very intense!  It dealt with life situations that were far removed from my life experiences.  Child abuse, alcoholism, drug abuse, along with other issues were the things that the author used to tell her story. The main characters, Grace Taylor and Chris Anderson, were well developed and likable to the point that I had to remind myself that they were fictional and not actual people.  I found myself cheering for them as they struggled to overcome their past hurts and failures and build new lives for themselves. I found myself wanting to interrupt the story and give them advice, especially when it came to the secrets they were hiding from each other! I wanted to strangle the dad for the things he said to Jacob and the damage he did to his self esteem and confidence.  Stephanie McCall showed a great deal of depth and spiritual maturity as she spoke through the characters, often giving advice and demonstrating wisdom beyond her years.  I enjoyed the author’s style and will look for other books by this talented author.

The one thing we can never hide from is God, yet so often times we try to convince ourselves that what we are attempting makes sense. No one will ever be able to judge if they don't know. That sounds fine, until that guilt begins to eat away at you bit by bit. Pretty soon however, what you are holding inside gets to be too much for you to justify any longer especially if those secrets can keep you from moving forward and finding true freedom. The enemy would prefer you keep that to yourself. Such is the premise behind Stephanie McCall's novel Fiery Secrets. Grace Taylor became a doctor to aid in the care and treatment of her ex husband Kyle when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Instead of seeing that as a blessing Kyle found that his illness was an excuse to verbal and physically abuse her. His childhood became the backdrop to teaching Kyle that abuse was something he could use to get what he wanted in life if he wasn't given freely to him. But when Grace divorced him, Kyle began to take control any way he could by abusing alcohol and drugs. Now with having custody of their son Jacob being stripped from him as well as his $100,000 trust fund, he knows he has to do something to keep his addiction going any way he can. Grace has been struggling with her own demons from the past. She too, became addicted to alcohol when she was married to Kyle in an effort to find a way to get along. The more they both drank, the less hostile he would be to her. But soon it would become too much especially after Jacob was born. But when her drinking cost her joint custody of Jacob, she resolved to become a better mom and put her entire past behind her and that included trusting men ever again. No one would ever be good enough for her and she would do all she could to win back Jacob no matter what the costs. Now that Jacob has been struggling with his test scores feeling unworthy and stupid according the labels his father Kyle placed on him, he retreats further into himself in an effort to protect what little remains of who he is in the eyes of his mother and father. But when Chris Anderson, is assigned to him as a tutor, he excels and finds self esteem is found in those who believe in you and teach you to believe in yourself. Now if only Chris could take that same advice and apply it to his own life. Giving up his career as an exceptional teacher when a school shooting took the life of three of his students. Believing he could have done more to save them, he takes a tutoring position while he continues to deal with the effects of PTSD from that day as well as overcoming the drug addiction his doctor inadvertently put him through. What he didn't expect was to fall for both Jacob and his mom, Grace. I received Fiery Secrets from Stephanie McCall compliments of Hope Springs Books for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed in this review are strictly my own. This is such an amazing story of hope amidst pasts that Grace and Chris believe will deem that as unworthy in anyone's eyes. We all have pasts we aren't proud of, but with God's grace and mercy we can find forgiveness and redemption. We can have a new chance at life, if we are willing to learn to take Jesus' advice and simply trust He can make good things come from all those past hurts and breath new life into each one of us. Stephanie utilizes this through this novel and shows us all what awaits us if we only are willing to try. I easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

Stephanie McCall has created a cast of characters who need to brave in very significant ways in her novel, Fiery Secrets. Grace, Chris and Jacob have truly come through trials that have seared their souls. They struggle with fear, trust and the acceptance of forgiveness from both God and other people in their lives. McCall’s story is both compelling and honest in the manner in which these situations are handled. Life isn’t always neat and clean in its choices or its consequences, and many times we refuse to accept the grace and forgiveness offered to us through Christ’s death on the cross. Our relationships with others are profoundly affected when we strive to achieve that forgiveness any other way. Grace and Chris must also struggle against some pretty evil people as they try to follow the Lord’s direction in their lives. They must learn to trust God’s protection, and there are instances that His protection is timed pretty tightly! There are many nail-biting moments in this story both emotionally and physically, and I found myself whispering a prayer or two on behalf of the characters myself!! Again, life circumstances aren’t always neat and clean, and Fiery Secrets masterfully displays that fact! I came to care a great deal about McCall’s cast of characters!! All of them are well-developed and very believable. She is very good at creating realistic relationships of every variety, and the relational issues dealt with in this story are both gritty and believable! I’ve become a true fan of McCall’s work, and I look forward to her next novel!! I’m happy to recommend Fiery Secrets to all readers!! (The Wordsmith Journal strives to guide readers to books of personal interest, with the understanding and respect that what appeals to some may not appeal to others. Fiery Secrets is a very good read. The two main characters, Dr. Grace Taylor and Chris Anderson have some powerful and destructive secrets that cause them all kinds of trouble in this book as they begin to form a relationship with one another. For both of these characters, the secrets they carry are based on shame, guilt and fear. I found myself frustrated with these two characters sometimes in how they dealt with each other and how they viewed themselves and their weaknesses. Then, after a few minutes, I would realize that the way they were behaving made perfect sense in their unique situations. There were many different characters in this story. I enjoyed the depth of characters. A few I really did not like! I did enjoy the characters of Jacob, Grace’s son, as well as her mother. Chris’ family was a mixed bag. There were times I liked them and times I didn’t. I do enjoy how the author resolved many family issues in this book. The author did a good job of creating some serious problems for the characters to work through and a dynamic, dangerous culmination of events toward the end of the book. I received a complimentary copy of Fiery Secrets from Hope Springs Books through BookCrash in exchange for an honest review, which I have given.
