This is a wonderful picture book that is enchanting yet has important lessons about kindness, forgiveness, and how our actions certainly have a huge impact on others. This story is about Red, a curious cardinal who wants to move past his every day mundane life. So, one day, he decides to leave his friends and fly off to a place far, far away where he can explore his environment. As he travels, he runs into danger and gets hurt. Red is injured and has no idea what to do. He feels sorry for himself. But then something almost magical happens. Mother Nature comes to his rescue! She shelters Red in a pine tree in a beautiful garden until he recovers from his injury. In that comforting garden, he feels secure. He learns a lot of important lessons from Mother Nature too. He learns that Mother Nature helps kind and good-hearted beings. Immediately Red feels good about himself. And he is able to take this feeling back to his friends. The illustrations are magical and will transport the young reader into a world that is inspiring and enchanting. The colors are bold and have a sparkly quality to them.
What a fun adventure story!
Reviewed by Romuald Dzemo for Readers' Favorite Colorful and filled with interesting characters, Kay Roberts's Forever Evergreen tells the story of nature in a way that will delight children. The young reader meets unusual and fun-loving characters — Red, Missy, Indigo, Relly, Hayden, and Leah — and their adventure with nature. We meet them at the old oak tree located in Geranium Circle as they play Hide And Go Seek (a game my kids love to play, even in the small space of their room). Young Red ignores the rumors that Enchanted Goshawk Garden is a dangerous place to be by making an adventure of it. The interaction with the different trees is fascinating, but when he gets wounded and is almost in despair, will Mother Nature help him recover? I always love to read children’s books with my kids (ages 5 and 7) and how well they enjoy the books reflects the author’s gift for entertaining young readers. My kids loved the characters in this story and when we were done reading, I asked them: “Did Red do anything wrong?” My five-year-old daughter responded fast: “He didn’t have to go to that frightful place.” I smiled. This is a timely book for children, a book that shows them how nature is a friend we need to treat with love and respect. The writing is accessible and the beautiful illustrations skillfully done. The images of characters include birds, strange creatures, and a cornucopia of natural elements. The story has a powerful moral lesson, one delivered in a way that kids can understand. It is a tale of forgiveness, love, and compassion. Forever Evergreen is one of those books that should be a welcome Christmas gift for children.
The stories’ message was heart-felt and could be adapted for children or adults. Love the compassion of the characters and Kay’s reference to her grandchildren is vey honest. Would recommend the book for Easter or any special child or grandchild.
