This autobiographical story by a highly experienced British foster mother tells relates her experiences caring for four severely abused young siblings, how Social Services failed them, and how loving parents helped them recover. At turns I was horrified by the things that were done to these children by every adult in their vicinity; then by the way government agencies first ignored the problem with full knowledge of what what happening, then stymied every effort to support recovery efforts. The narrative turns to the impact of the abuse on the children and the difficulties faced by their adoptive parents, including extensive problems with the education system. Throughout the default reaction from authorities was denial. Ultimately the story is hopeful. The children, though badly damaged, improve and manage to cobble together some level of decent lives. But it makes one wonder how much better those lives could have been if they had received the help they needed. The author states that she hopes her story serves as an object lesson for caregivers and involved agencies.

An older foster care couple, that chose to take on 4 children with horrific pasts, who faced unbelievable odds, and created a strong family bond for children who tested them beyond belief.

God bless foster parents.Without them so many of these neglected and abused children would be lost forever.

What courage to retell a most amazing saga of the foster parent / foster to adopted child, story ! These parents persevered beyond so many adverse conditions and received so little support. It was a social services eye opener and so well written in a balanced manner. This book took great courage to write.
