Overview

Fractured Honor by Kaylea Cross

An elite warrior struggling to find his place in the civilian world.

Weary from his years on the battlefield, SF Captain Beckett Hollister has returned home to Crimson Point to take over the family business for his dying father. But adjusting to life outside the military is harder than he imagined, and being back home forces him to confront things he'd rather not face. Including the one woman he shouldn't want and can't have--his best friend's little sister.

A love that was always meant to be.

Town vet Sierra Buchanan has known Beckett her entire life. She's crushed on him for years, but because of his relationship with her family, the stubborn man refuses to see her as more than the girl he grew up with. As tragedy brings them together, neither of them realizes that the sins of Beckett's past have come home to haunt him. When Sierra becomes the target of his unforeseen enemy, Beckett must vanquish his demons to save her.

Beckett has had the hots for Sierra for a long time. She is the sister to his best friend, so he never intends to act on the urge. As a military man, and a good friend, he has kept himself away from temptation - until now. Sierra has wanted Beckett for such a long time. She knows he has started to look at her differently, but she also knows he is avoiding her as well. Her brother's best friend is a fine specimen and she means to have him. This story classifies as a slow burn. The heat is there. The want is there. The mutual feelings are there. I loved the characters loyalty. I loved how clear the feelings and worries came across. Good sold story and a great read. ***This early copy was given in exchange for an honest review, by Netgalley and its publisher.

Good start to the Crimson Point series. We meet Beck who has just returned home from the military after years of service and is trying to adjust back to life as a civilian. He's taken over his father's remodel/contracting business when his Dad became ill. He's brought in mostly Vet's, several who were on his team. Coming home also means seeing Sierra, now the town Vet and her brother is Beck's best friend. Sierra has always had a mad crush on Beck but he's never seen her as anything other than the little sister. Little sister is all grown up now and catches his eye. When things do spill over with Beck and Sierra, the steam is wallpaper peeling. One of Beck's employee's who has a TBI has begun to have behavior problems that have been worsening by the day. His wife is a good friend of Sierra's and she confides in Sierra the behavior changes that are taking place. After the final straw and Beck is more than accommodating, he's forced to let him go. There are a couple of sub plots, the young neighbor girl who likes to sit on Beck's porch, and Beck ends up adopting a rescue dog due to her influence. That's a plot twist as well and along with an unknown narrator who gave me the creeps a couple times, there are several threads in the plot line. The best way to hurt Beck someone decides is to hurt his woman and the story takes yet another twist. Didn't see that coming. Great start to a series, we get a sneak peek at the next book involving a new gal in town and Sierra's brother who is the town sheriff.

Former SF Captain Beckett Hollister has left the military after a final mission left him concerned about his orders that he had to follow that no longer felt justified to him. He and needed to go home to Crimson Point. He needs to think about his future, to spend time with his father, who is dying, and to keep the family construction business afloat. Beckett knows he will be seeing Sierra Buchanan, sister of his best friend. He has long had feelings for Sierra, but has never acted on those feelings. Woven into this story is enchanting Ella, a little girl who lives down the street from Beckett. Ella has rescued an elderly dog, Walter, who was abandoned. This adds such a heartwarming touch to the story as Ella somehow guilts Beckett into rescuing Walter. But there is danger ahead for Beckett as an unknown enemy, from his past, will come after him. He will deal with this enemy, but when they come after Sierra, all bets are off. Beckett knows he will do whatever is necessary to protect Sierra. I very much look forward to the second book in this series. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to give an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

FRACTURED HONOR is the first instalment in Kaylea Cross’ contemporary, adult CRIMSON POINT romantic suspense series focusing on the people of Crimson Point, Oregon. This is thirty-nine year old Captain Beckett Hollister, and thirty-one year old, veterinarian Dr. Sierra Buchanan’s story line. Told from several third person perspectives including Beckett and Sierra, FRACTURED HONOR follows the friends to lovers/best friend’s little sister trope between thirty-nine year old Captain Beckett Hollister, and thirty-one year old, veterinarian Dr. Sierra Buchanan. When his last mission to Syria went all to h*ll, Beckett returned Stateside to discover his father only had months to live. Struggling to overcome the horrors witnessed on his last assignment Beckett Hollister throws himself headfirst into his father’s business, hiring some of his former Special Forces teammates in the wake. Returning to Crimson Point, Oregon also meant having to face the woman that has always called to his heart but a woman off-limits as Sierra Buchanan was his best friend’s little sister, and he was in no position to demand anything more. What ensues is the building love and relationship between Beckett and Sierra, and the potential fall-out as Beckett’s past comes seeking revenge for a mission that was out of his control. Sierra Buchanan has had a crush on her brother’s best friend for as long as she can remember but Sierra has been friend-zoned for almost as long. No longer the little girl Beckett remembers Sierra isn’t willing to wait for Beckett to make the first move knowing she would probably have to wait forever. Beckett Hollister has lusted after his best friend’s sister but wasn’t willing to cross the line between friendship and love but his father’s recent decline found our hero needing the friendship and companionship of the woman that called to his heart. The relationship between Beckett and Sierra is a friends to lovers romance wherein Beckett battles between head and heart. His neighbor’s elderly dog is the perfect excuse to get closer to the woman he loves but getting closer may also mean placing Sierra in the direct line of fire. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text. We are introduced to Beckett’s fellow Special Forces solders: Sergeant Jase Weaver; Carter Boyd and his wife Molly; Beckett’s father Mr. Hollister; Sierra’s brother Sheriff Noah Buchanan, and town newcomer Poppy Larsen. Noah and Poppy’s story is next in Buried Lies. The world building follows the romance between Sierra and Beckett, as well as the crumbling relationship between Carter and Molly. Carter suffers with the lingering after affects of head injuries suffered during the war in Syria, injuries that are now contributing to the demise of his marriage. FRACTURED HONOR is a story of betrayal and revenge; honor and support; romance, love and happily ever after. The relationship between the tight-knit group of Special Forces soldiers struggles in the face of the knowledge that one of their own is facing a battle he is starting to lose. The premise is intriguing, engaging and realistic; the characters are damaged, spirited and colorful; the romance is seductive and spicy.

Fractured Honor is an amazing start to the Crimson Point Series by Kaylea Cross. It is a romantic suspense story that highlights the seen and unseen wounds of war. There are so many twists and turns in this story that it is one read late into the night page turner, at least it was for me. Just when I thought I had figured out where the danger was coming from, another event would point in a different direction. The novel is brilliantly written so that it felt as if you were right there as each encounter, confrontation or situation unfolded. For a suspense book the sense of place is written like a small-town story where you can picture the area in your mind. The romance is built slowly just as SF Captain Beckett Hollister slowly builds his new civilian life. He battles with the heartache of loss both at home and on the field of war so that it is not always an easy transition. It is a story that makes you admire those who have served this country and demands that they receive the respect that they deserve. Along the way, you hope that all find the love that SF Captain Beckett Hollister finds with the irresistible Sierra Buchanan. The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Incredible beginning to a new series!!! Crimson Point has the potential to be huge!!!! I LOVE when my favorite authors start something brand new….and Kaylea has done an awesome job setting this up. This is the story of Beckett and Sierra….it is a long, waiting to grow up, not being seen as the little sister, going off to war and coming home to heal story. The poignancy of the PTSD and a father’s terminal illness is the drama that the love story needs and the evil that plays into that part is not what you expect. Plus you are introduced to the upcoming characters and setting up the background stories in such a way that you know you will be one-clicking that preorder!!! And WALTER!!!! My heart was stolen by an old, broken down bassett hound rescued from certain death. How can you not love any story with a lovable dog and a cute kid who saves him?? I can’t wait to see this community develop and grow!!!!

Fractured Honor was my first book by Kaylea Cross and I really enjoyed it! The writing was smooth and well done and after an initially slow beginning, the story really starts to pick up. While I felt the first half was more like a contemporary romance the second half brings in more of the suspense elements. I loved Sierra from the very beginning; she's incredibly compassionate and caring to her friends and family and she'd do anything to help them. She's crushed on Beckett for a long time but now that he's home he's been avoiding her. Sierra can't figure out what she might have done wrong so when she confronts Beckett she's stunned to find he has feelings for her as well. But Beckett is used to controlling himself and he makes a valiant effort to stay away from Sierra. As Beckett's father's health deteriorates he finds himself leaning on Sierra for support and he can't deny his feelings anymore. I loved that once Beckett admits out loud how he really feels for Sierra he goes all in on being with her. Kaylea Cross spends a lot of time setting up characters related to our MCs and while I enjoyed getting to know them I also felt that they sometimes took over the story. Since this is my first book by the author I'm not sure if this is a regular trademark of hers but I would have preferred a little more time with Sierra and Beckett as a couple. Most of the first third is centered on day to day events that draw in the other characters and their backstories. This means that Sierra and Beckett don't really become a couple until the second half so I would have enjoyed a little more development for them. I'll definitely be checking out the next in this series as well as going through Kaylea Cross's back list for more reads!
