Born in Coyoacán, Mexico City, she endured lifelong health problems, including polio as a child and a near-fatal bus accident at age 18, which caused chronic pain and medical complications throughout her life. These experiences heavily influenced her art, which explored themes of identity, suffering, femininity, and Mexican culture.
