Frozen Sun by Stan Jones

Blizzards, tundra, and bush pilots enliven this thrilling mystery starring Alaska State Trooper Nathan Active, who has been assigned to the remote Arctic town of Chukchi. Though born an Inupiat Eskimo, Active was raised in Anchorage by Caucasian parents and has little knowledge of his native culture. During the long months spent in Chukchi, he rallied against the icy weather and struggled to understand his two cultural identities, but he has realized how deeply he has been settling into the rhythms of community life when Grace Palmer, a local beauty queen, goes missing. The state trooper mounts a search that ultimately leads him halfway across Alaska—and gives him plenty of time to discover he is in love with Grace. Closing in on the answers, however, he discovers evidence that points to an agonizing situation: she is either dead, or she is a cold-blooded killer.

Frozen Sun is probably best described as Arctic noir. Stan Jones takes what might seem a tired plot and gives it new life by transplanting it to the Far North. Nathan Active, his half white half Inuit Alaskan state trooper protagonist, is mesmerized by the portrait of missing local beauty queen Grace Palmer when her father asks him to help locate her. The decade-old trail leads Nathan to the low life parts of Anchorage and a fishing plant in the Aleutian Islands. Is Grace dead or alive and did she push her roommate under a snowplow? Nathan's life is turned upside down by the end of the case. Jones uses his locales to make what could be cliched into a convincing story. You may not admire the choices Nathan Active makes, but you do identify with his dilemma.

Alaskan State Trooper Nathan Active once again returns to the pages amid the Alaskan wilderness and its cities and towns. It also takes us into the webs that man creates for himself. I was so glad to see this title printed in English since it had only been in German. Can't wait for the 2009 title to be released.

Have read all 3 Nathan Active books & by far Frozen Sun is the best. Mr. Jones has outdone himself with Frozen Sun. Can't wait for the next installment.
