Gateway is a military sci-fi with emphasis on the socio-political. Though there are enough battles to keep one entertained, the core of this novel is deeper than boots on the ground and fleets engaged. Dorsey has created a fascinating contrast of societies. One based on lineage and atheism; the other on merit and religious conviction. There is also a third party at work here, using propaganda to ensure its own needs are met. Gateway is more in-depth than the typical shoot ‘em up, blow ‘em up. Which is not surprising considering Dorsey’s background. He’s written a pair of non-fiction works, and was also an engineer in the U.S. Navy. Cleverly constructed, well written, with several reverses of plot, this is an entertaining read, which poses a number of intriguing questions. Highly recommended for those who want a little flesh and brain to go with those ground-pounder boots.
Gateway is a thrilling military sci-fi novel, filled with scenes of terrestrial and space combat, political machinations, and interpersonal character interactions. I loved and was quickly immersed into the world that Dorsey created, and his use of distinct earth cultures as a basis for the civilations in the story is done very well. He allows these idealogically different people to clash, and exploring the truths and lies that each civilization tells is a great foundation for a novel. I enjoyed exploring this world through Stone's eyes, and having my own conceptions of the way things are challenged as he expands his worldview. Add to that well narrated scenes of military engagements, space flight, and adrenaline-pumping hand-to-hand combat, and you have yourself a book that you won't want to put down. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a solid sci-fi novel that can be enjoyed at the face value of the action, as well as the deeper moral and cultural questions that the reader is presented with. A major reason I love the sci-fi genre is its ability to examine ethical, moral, theological, and cultural questions in a unique and fun way, and I this book lives up to that calling.
It's a military science fiction space opera that gets every element correct. The dialogue feels natural, the story is exciting, and the military mindset adds a grounding realism that helped suspend any early disbelief. The action is well-paced, and kept me eager for each new chapter. With how well everything built up throughout, the ending didn't disappoint and leaves you feeling satisfied with the journey.
A fun read that movies quickly and doesn't pull any punches! Will leave you wanting to immediately start the next book.
