Look carefully. There may be a gem in your garden.
For nearly four decades, watercolorist Holly Hobbie has drawn inspiration from the wonders of nature. During one especially hard winter, she found herself imagining the story of a determined toad's spring journey. Her vivid depiction of this endearing creature's glorious yet fragile world is a sparkling celebration of survival and renewal. From the muddy brown road outside a farmhouse to the sweet-smelling garden to the cool lily pads in the pond, readers will feel their senses rejuvenated by Holly Hobbie's gemlike, detailed paintings in this nearly wordless work.

Most Helpful Customer Reviews
Yes, this is a gem. This is the endearing, tender tale about a toad's perilous journey to the author artist's garden, where he is found by her little granddaughter who allows him to live free. Except for two letters, the first from grandmother to granddaughter, and the second, the granddaughter's reply , the book is wordless. The charming watercolor paintings of a farm in spring will warm any heart even in the coldest of winters. Appended are interesting facts about toads. The author expresses the idea that all life is amazing if one studies it. A retired children's librarian of many years, I would highly recommend it for four to six-year-olds and anyone who wants a beautiful, heartwarming book.
