George Frederick Warren (1830-1916) was an adventurer, explorer, husband, father and grandfather. Born in Connecticut, when he reached his teens he was apprenticed to a jeweler in New Britain, but left early in order to sail around Cape Horn to the California Gold Rush. After three years he returned to Connecticut, married Julia Calista Stanley and moved to Illinois to farm. He served in the Civil War from 1861-1863, then returned to the farm.
