Fast-paced, with a great plot and a compelling cast of characters. We will need to see the protaganist again. This book has it all -- mystery, suspense, humor, history, romance/sex, and a plot that grabs you from the first page. Eric Wilder treats the reader to a feast in his first published novel, and I for one want seconds.

Wilder has certainly created a couple of memorable characters, set in a compelling location, inside a fast-moving story. He is a master at dialogue. It rings true most of the time, and this is a major skill missing in lots of novelists. I also admire the way he ends chapters. Many end not only logically, but with a strong visual image that lingers satisfyingly long after you close the book. Buck is a man of integrity, but also deeply flawed with his alcoholism, which makes him interesting and foolish. You can see that he will never 'get the girl' because he is so unstable and unreliable. And all through the chapters we keep hoping he will not continue to be his own worst enemy. Wilder tells a good yarn. The story has multiple layers. It is easy to see this as a screen play and a movie. And it is easy to see how Wilder can create more stories for Buck in a series.

Start with the following ingredients: a ghost, a sunken riverboat filled with gold, and a possible murder. Mix in the town of Deception (which lives up to its name) and a voodoo priestess, and you now have a recipe for a spellbinding novel. Buck McDivit has just realized that he has an Aunt Emma, and now she¿s dead ¿ most likely murdered. Before she died, she sold part of Fitzgerald Island to a local couple and mortgaged the rest of the property away. Or did she? Several records seem to have mysteriously vanished, and the officially recorded statement is that Aunt Emma committed suicide. Buck has started to care for the couple that has been deprived of their rightful property, and he is determined to return it to them. He has a long uphill battle, resisting the establishment that wants them out. Sometimes Buck¿s enthusiasm gets a bit carried away and he winds up in some interesting situations! His heart is in the right place, even if at times he and his friends don¿t act entirely rational. Ghost of a Chance is a quick-moving story with lots of action. The reader feels sympathy for the family being railroaded out of Deception, and cheers for Buck as he fights for their rights. Although the story could have used a bit more editing, the end result is a satisfying conclusion, which ties up all loose ends. Muse Review Mark: Good Reviewer: Alice Berger, Muse Reviews

Very enjoyable read. Mr Wilder you are quite the story teller. A couple of interesting twist that I didn't see coming made this a great story, we get ghost, human emotion and a bit of romance. Very real characters and a believable scenario, looking forward to exploring work done by this author.
