Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Young
A chance meeting at a doctor’s office brings Gizmo, a sheltie puppy, into the hearts and lives of Charles and Lizzie. Not just any family, Charles and Lizzie’s family are foster puppy parents! Gizmo is a bundle of fluff and energy when he is around two-year old twins, but presents himself as a mild mannered, well-behaved puppy when he is away from the commotion of toddlers. One conversation leads to another and Gizmo’s family feels it is best to have him live with Charles and Lizzie to train and hopefully to find a forever home. Gizmo seems perfect for Charles. Hesitantly, Charles has agreed to be on a basketball team, but he has yet to make a basket. He dreads going to practice, especially now that there is a new puppy to train. But a promise is a promise and Charles reluctantly heads off to basketball practice. No baskets are made. On Gizmo’s first attempt at obstacle course training he fails to perform. Shelties are like that: very sensitive to their surroundings and need to focus on the task at hand. The dog trainer suggests that Gizmo arrive early for the next class, to see what he can do. Sure enough, the one-on-one practice is just what Gizmo needed to perform. Parallel to Gizmo’s training—Charles receives individual attention from Harry, a former basketball player. What a coincidence! Charles finally makes a basket then another and another. Charles and Gizmo both need to focus on what is in front of them. Threats to quit basketball are replaced with positive energy and a desire to be part of a team. Everything changes when someone sees potential and encourages people (and dogs!) to be their best. Gizmo is eventually placed in a new home, and though it is sad for Charles, who has become attached to him, he will not be too far away, easing the heartache just a smidgen. This book in “The Puppy Place” series is a friendly read. Situations are relevant to the target audience, without being too saccharine sweet. Following the story are helpful puppy tips for consideration with a puppy of your own. Enough information about specific breeds is incorporated into each story making decisions about puppy ownership or breed choice a bit more informed, if not easier. Reviewer: Elizabeth Young; Ages 7 to 10.
