The Bible clearly instructs us to hide God's Word in our hearts, but most of us find it challenging to memorize Scripture, even though we know that nothing encourages and gives hope in difficult times like God's Word. In God is My Refuge, Kathy Howard skillfully provides what few books on Scripture memorization offer--quick, easy, how tos! Kathy engages the reader by sharing her own experiences with scriptural topics, providing biblical examples, asking thought evoking questions, and offering prompts to apply the lessons learned from Scripture. Each day's devotional and activity could easily be mastered in five or ten minutes, but the derived spiritual maturity will last a lifetime.

I come from a long line of worriers, so when I was asked to review a new devotional by Kathy Howard called God Is My Refuge: 12 Weeks of Devotions and Scripture Memory for Troubled Times, I was instantly on board. (As a disclosure, I was given a copy in exchange for an objective review. All opinions are mine, and are freely given.) This twelve week devotional covers topics such as trouble, illness, fear, worry, loneliness, broken relationships, and probably the biggest thing tired moms deal with...weariness. Each topic is broken down into five days' worth of Scripture, thoughts from the author, questions for further thought, and most importantly, Scripture memory. I LOVE how much emphasis is placed on memorizing Scripture. We can read books all day long, but how many have we really internalized? Scripture is the enduring Word of God. Kathy shares verses that relate to each topic (only one verse a week, so it's not overwhelming), and when you're in the middle of a huge worry fit, or afraid of something, or dealing with a broken relationship, having the Word of God in your mind to battle the enemy with is a mighty weapon. I can remember times of keeping myself up at night, afraid of what the next day or week or month would bring. Lying there in the dark, the only comfort I had was memorized Scripture. Her tips for memorizing are terrific! Kathy's devotions go along with each Scripture reading to help us fully understand that God wants us to come to Him with our struggles. Because I'm dealing with some health issues at the moment, "Illness" was the first topic I ran to, just to see what she had to say about it. As soon as I read day one, "God's Masterpiece," my spirit was immediately calmed. Here's just a bit: "Your heavenly Father is intimately familiar with your body. He knows when you are healthy, and He knows when you struggle with illness or injury. You can trust Him with the body He so wonderfully made" (pp 61-62). Just knowing that He knows exactly what's going on with the intricately designed, hidden part of me...it just brings me peace. I can't wait for the next twelve weeks. Since I struggle so much with so many of the topics of this book, I'm greatly looking forward to learning more how to run to God my refuge!

I was really excited to read this book as I anticipated hearing a new perspective on 12 of the most common trials we all face at one point: Trouble, Need, Loneliness, Illness, Fear, Broken Relationships, Uncertainty, Weariness, Worry, Temptation, Grief, and Discontentment. That's not what happened for me. It wasn't new. It was tried and true. Kathy Howard managed to bring me back to my roots of faith and remind me what I believe and why. She encouraged me to equip myself with His Word (by memorizing scripture) so that I might be prepared for when these trials come my way. This book tackles fear one topic at a time. It builds confidence as it reminds you who is by your side and who will see you through. One of my favorite excerpts from the book: "You may feel the heat and smell the smoke, but you will not be consumed. God may not choose to rescue you out of every trouble, but He will always rescue you through them. He will not leave your side. (Psalm 46:1)" Her practical applications bring comfort when needed. I found her encouragement soothing and can picture myself going back to this book for reference time and time again. This would be an excellent devotional to gift to anyone struggling with seasons in their life as it will remind them of the very foundation they are built upon. One last quote: "Believer, God looked at you and saw your need for a Savior. He counted the cost and offered His Son. He loves you that much."
