Overview

If God’s grace could talk . . .

Actually, it already has. And is. And does.
And here’s what it sounds like.
It sounds like hope for days when life feels absolutely overwhelming. It sounds like promise that speaks into every relationship, no matter how desperately in need or how dear to your heart. It sounds like sufficiency in all those places where none of us is ever good enough. It sounds like confidence that would make no sense at all except the full weight of God is steadfastly behind it.
If God’s grace could talk, it would sound exactly like what this book says in every Scripture on every page. And it wouldn’t sound nearly as old as it actually is, because it’s new every morning and within instant reach at every moment.
It would sound like God, talking directly to you. Because He is. And does.
And always does it with grace.

CHAPTER 1

ACCEPTANCE

When we are faced with family conflicts, job stresses, or uncertainty about the future, we can rest in knowing that God's love for us is constant.

* * *

But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or his stature because I have rejected him. Humans do not see what the Lord sees, for humans see what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart."

1 Samuel 16:7

* * *

"Everyone the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never cast out."

John 6:37

* * *

But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8 If God is for us, who is against us?

Romans 8:31

* * *

Peter began to speak: "Now I truly understand that God doesn't show favoritism, but in every nation the person who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him."

Acts 10:34–35

* * *

Heavenly Father, thank You that no matter what trials and stressors I might face, You uphold me and guide me according to Your purposes.

ANGER

Anger is an emotion that can reveal to us our values. The key, however, is not to act out in anger but to speak and act with love.

* * *

Refrain from anger and give up your rage; do not be agitated — it can only bring harm.

Psalm 37:8

* * *

A patient person shows great understanding, but a quick-tempered one promotes foolishness.

Proverbs 14:29

* * *

A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath.

Proverbs 15:1

"But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Whoever insults his brother or sister, will be subject to the court. Whoever says, 'You fool!' will be subject to hellfire."

Matthew 5:22

* * *

Be angry and do not sin. Don't let the sun go down on your anger, and don't give the devil an opportunity.

Ephesians 4:26–27

* * *

Lord, may Your Holy Spirit guide my words and actions when I'm feeling angry so that I can show grace to my spouse, children, and others around me.

ANXIETY

Beneath our anxieties is a need to feel in control — but our peace is found in knowing that the Creator of the universe holds us safely in the palm of His hand.

* * *

"Therefore I tell you: Don't worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn't life more than food and the body more than clothing? Consider the birds of the sky: They don't sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you worth more than they? Can any of you add one moment to his life-span by worrying?"

Matthew 6:25–27

* * *

"Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don't let your heart be troubled or fearful."

John 14:27

Don't worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6–7

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.

2 Timothy 1:7

* * *

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.

1 Peter 5:6–7

* * *

Heavenly Father, I entrust to You my family, my children, our finances, and my well-being, knowing that Your peace will guard my heart and mind.

AUTHORITY

As a mom, you hold a particular position of authority over your children, and as such, you have the opportunity to reveal to them the very character of God.

* * *

Then he said to them, "Give, then, to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.

Matthew 22:21–22

* * *

Jesus came near and said to them, "All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth."

Matthew 28:18

* * *

Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God.

Romans 13:1

For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow — in heaven and on earth and under the earth — and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:9–11

* * *

Submit to every human authority because of the Lord, whether to the emperor as the supreme authority or to governors as those sent out by him to punish those who do what is evil and to praise those who do what is good. For it is God's will that you silence the ignorance of foolish people by doing good.

1 Peter 2:13–15

* * *

Father God, please grant me wisdom and grace to be a mirror of godly authority in my family, and I willingly submit to Your authority in all situations.

BEAUTY

All of creation is ablaze with the beauty of the Lord — look for it in sunsets, the night stars, blooms of flowers, and the glowing face of your children.

* * *

I have asked one thing from the Lord; it is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, gazing on the beauty of the Lord and seeking him in his temple.

Psalm 27:4

* * *

I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wondrously made. Your works are wondrous, and I know this very well.

Psalm 139:14

Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised.

Proverbs 31:30

* * *

You are absolutely beautiful, my darling; there is no imperfection in you.

Song of Solomon 4:7

* * *

Don't let your beauty consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and wearing gold jewelry, but rather what is inside the heart — the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.

1 Peter 3:3–4

Heavenly Father, I thank You and praise You for the beauty You have poured out on this earth, which heals and blesses the hearts that behold it.

BLESSINGS

We can experience deep joy when we take notice of the abundant blessings in our lives and praise and thank the Lord for such bountiful grace.

* * *

"May the Lord bless you and protect you; may the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; may the Lord look with favor on you and give you peace."

Numbers 6:24–26

* * *

Indeed, we have all received grace upon grace from his fullness, for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

John 1:16–17

And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work.

2 Corinthians 9:8

Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavens in Christ.

And my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19

* * *

Heavenly Father, I thank You and praise You for all the ways You have shown me mercy and grace, and I ask for the blessing of Your presence throughout this day.

CARING

Moms play an essential role in their children's lives: you reflect the character of God as a tender parent, a nurturer, and a comforter during hard times.

* * *

"I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

John 13:34–35

* * *

Carry one another's burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:2

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work for the good of all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith.

Galatians 6:10

* * *

Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Philippians 2:4

Heavenly Father, help me reflect Your gracious patience and unfailing love to my children.

CHILDREN

Children are a heritage from the Lord and a precious gift to be stewarded with love, mercy, and grace.

* * *

Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord, offspring, a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the sons born in one's youth. Happy is the man who has filled his quiver with them. They will never be put to shame when they speak with their enemies at the city gate.

Psalm 127:3–5

* * *

Even a young man is known by his actions — by whether his behavior is pure and upright.

Proverbs 20:11

When Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the little children come to me. Don't stop them, because the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."

Mark 10:14

* * *

Fathers, don't stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Ephesians 6:4

* * *

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

Colossians 3:20

* * *

Dear Jesus, may my children be a reminder that Your kingdom belongs to those with a childlike heart and mind.

COMFORT

None of us are immune from hardships, loss, and grief, but we can take heart that no matter what has happened, the Lord promises to comfort us.

* * *

Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff — they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4

* * *

Remember your word to your servant; you have given me hope through it. This is my comfort in my affliction: Your promise has given me life.

Psalm 119:49–50

As a mother comforts her son, so I will comfort you, and you will be comforted in Jerusalem.

Isaiah 66:13

* * *

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."

Matthew 5:4

* * *

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

2 Corinthians 1:3–4

* * *

Dear God, thank You for comforting me and healing my heart in times of trial, and may I be a source of comfort for others.

COMPASSION

The Lord commands us to love our neighbors as ourselves and to also love our enemies — godly compassion is speaking and acting out of love in the best interest of others.

* * *

Yet he was compassionate; he atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them. He often turned his anger aside and did not unleash all his wrath.

Psalm 78:38

* * *

When he went ashore, he saw a large crowd and had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Then he began to teach them many things.

Mark 6:34

Carry one another's burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:2

* * *

And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.

Ephesians 4:32

* * *

Lord, may Your Holy Spirit fill my heart and soul with concern for my family, neighbors, and colleagues so that I may be a willing conduit of Your love.

CONFLICT

One way we can walk in the Spirit, rather than according to the flesh, is to resist the pride and need to be right that we often feel in conflicts with others.

"If your brother sins against you, go and rebuke him in private. If he listens to you, you have won your brother. But if he won't listen, take one or two others with you, so that by the testimony of two or three witnesses every fact may be established. If he doesn't pay attention to them, tell the church. If he doesn't pay attention even to the church, let him be like a Gentile and a tax collector to you."

Matthew 18:15–17

* * *

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud; instead, associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Give careful thought to do what is honorable in everyone's eyes. If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Romans 12:14–18

A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath.

Proverbs 15:1

* * *

Therefore, putting away lying, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor, because we are members of one another. Be angry and do not sin. Don't let the sun go down on your anger, and don't give the devil an opportunity.

Ephesians 4:25–27

* * *

What is the source of wars and fights among you? Don't they come from your passions that wage war within you? You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and wage war. You do not have because you do not ask.

James 4:1–2

* * *

Lord Jesus, may I imitate Your grace and gentleness in any disagreement or confrontation with other people in my life.

CONTENTMENT

The quickest route to contentment is through gratitude and trust — recognize the abundant goodness in your life and trust that God never fails to provide for your needs.

* * *

"So don't worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?' For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Therefore don't worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

Matthew 6:31–34

* * *

He then told them, "Watch out and be on guard against all greed, because one's life is not in the abundance of his possessions."

Luke 12:15

* * *

I don't say this out of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I find myself. I know both how to make do with little, and I know how to make do with a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content — whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need.

Philippians 4:11–12

* * *

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out. If we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.

1 Timothy 6:6–8

* * *

Keep your life free from the love of money. Be satisfied with what you have, for he himself has said, I will never leave you or abandon you.

Hebrews 13:5

* * *

Heavenly Father, thank You for your unfailing love and faithfulness, and may You grow in me a godly contentment.

COURAGE

Having courage doesn't mean that you feel no fear; rather it means having a willingness and readiness to proceed despite the fear.

* * *

"Haven't I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."

Joshua 1:9

* * *

I always let the Lord guide me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Psalm 16:8

Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart be courageous. Wait for the Lord.

Psalm 27:14

* * *

Be alert, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong.

1 Corinthians 16:13

* * *

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.

2 Timothy 1:7

* * *

Dear God, grant me a sense of Your strength and presence that I may face this day and its challenges with courage.

COVENANT

God's covenant with us through the blood of Jesus assures us that we are His people, forgiven and deeply loved.

* * *

He remembers his covenant forever, the promise he ordained for a thousand generations — the covenant he made with Abraham, swore to Isaac, and confirmed to Jacob as a decree and to Israel as a permanent covenant: "I will give the land of Canaan to you as your inherited portion."

Psalm 105:8–11
