In addition to creating nutritious recipes that maximize every ingredient and use economical cooking methods, Ms. Brown gives tips on shopping; on creating pantry basics; on mastering certain staples—pizza dough, flour tortillas—and saucy extras that make everything taste better, like spice oil and tzatziki; and how to make fundamentally smart, healthful food choices.

The idea for Good and Cheap is already proving itself. The author launched a Kickstarter campaign to self-publish and fund the buy one/give one model. Hundreds of thousands of viewers watched her video and donated $145,000, and national media are paying attention. This book has changed my life. Not so much the recepes, but the staples and shopping ideas. The recepes are awesome and have given me great ideas to keep making. The sauces, oils, and spice ideas has made it so we are eating out less and having great food at home. My wife whom doesn't cook much has looked through and obtained ideas for things she would like to make.

Good and Cheap by Leanne Brown is a cookbook contains recipes that should help people participating in the USDA SNAP food program. The recipes focus on spending $4 per day per person based on the $4 per day per person USDA allotment. The author’s cookbook is filled with grocery shopping tips, kitchen set-up and recipes. Some of the key points the author covers include: *Buy in bulk *Create a pantry *Shop weekly *Shop seasonally She also gives tips on what kitchen equipment to purchase to help make cooking easier. Some of the recipes you’ll find in her cookbook include: *Basic oatmeal with variations *Omelette (that’s spelled correctly) *Broccoli Rabe and Mozzarella Calzones *Peanut Chicken and Broccoli with Coconut Rice *Tofu Hot Pot *Roasted Vegetables *Salsa You will find a cost analysis for each recipe and plenty of color photos illustrating the cookbook. Recommend. Review written after downloading a galley from NetGalley.

A Great Book for when you are on a budget or just starting out. I got this book through Net Galley in exchange for a review, but I would have bought this book regardless, because just the other day I was wondering how well you can eat when everything just keeps getting more and more expensive. Leanne Brown created a wonderful book with simple instructions on how to eat consciously, not just for people who are on SNAP but for anybody who is on a budget. The book is filled with wonderful pictures, lots of recipes that are simple to prepare, great ideas for setting up a Pantry and plenty of tips for shopping well and ideas for spices and aromatics. This would be a great gift not just for students or somebody who does not have a lot of experience in the kitchen, even more experienced cooks can easily pick up a tip or two as well.

Simple recipes, good variety, perfect gift for my graduating son who will be living on his own (neither my home nor a dorm with cafeteria) for the first time in his life! There is also advice for initially stocking then building up a pantry. Recommended.

Who knew you could eat so creatively on $4 a day? As a new Dave Ramsey fan, this book caught my eye and the recipes didn't disappoint. Although the recipes lean heavily on pasta and other carbs in many cases, the diverse collection of flavors did appeal to me enough to buy the book and use it as a reference to eat nutritious yet cost-conscious meals. For anyone on a tight budget, this is a great cookbook, and also for anyone wanting to stretch their grocery dollars.

Who knew that for about $4 per day that you can enjoy everything from Peanut Chicken and Broccoli with Coconut Rice to Broiled Tilapia with Lime and even, Spicy Pulled Pork. This cookbook has a lot of fantastic information about not just how to prepare food, but when and how to buy it to maximize your budget. Whether you're receiving SNAP benefits or just living on a tight budget as a single-income family there are recipes and information here that will help you eat well and even quite healthfully. This book is highly recommended. I'd also recommend another great book called Conquer Your Kitchen, a cookbook reference guide that will show you over 100 money saving kitchen hacks to save you valuable time and money. Including the difference between baking soda and baking powder, reveals how long raw eggs will last in your refrigerator, finally explains what is "resting time" is, and even reveals the proper temperature to cook chicken. More importantly, it will explain why you should never thaw raw meat out on your counter top or even submerged in warm or hot water. I learned the hard way and after two days in the hospital, I will never do it again. Buy it or borrow, but read Conquer Your Kitchen from Chef Jai Scovers!
