Overview

Great Planes acquaints the reader and general aviation enthusiast with those civilian aircraft built shortly after WWII and into the late 1960s. These airplanes can be purchased for the price of a new car. They are inexpensive to own and operate and many qualify under the FAAs new Sport Pilot - Light Sport Aircraft rules.
The author gives a little history and often a pilot report on such great classic airplanes as the Aeronca, Piper Cub, Ercoupe, Luscombe, Cessna 120/140, Stinson Voyager, Cessna 150/152, Cessna 170, Cessna 172, Piper Cherokee 140, Taylorcraft, and Short Wing Pipers.
There are chapters on mastering taildragger flight (landing) and the ever important pre-buy inspection process.

About the Author

On most Saturday mornings you could fi nd Vernon sitting in front of the television waiting for the announcer to say, “Out of the clear blue of the western sky comes Sky King.”
When Vernon was 12-years-old, he and his family would often drive on the back roads, from Outlook, Washington to Zillah, Washington and they would pass a prosperous looking ranch. The ranch had a small private runway and the owner had a shiny black and silver Cessna 140. If Vernon was lucky, they would would see the plane take off as he passed. Not often mind you, but once in awhile.
Vernon grew up to work in the newpaper business — not a high paying career, with all due respect to the
likes of Rupert Murdoch.
As he states it, “I have logged most of my flying time by, or because of, writing pilot reports or other stories
about various aircraft. It is called flying a desk.”
Vernon is a Northwest farm boy who possesses an abiding love of both writing and airplanes. After nearly 15 years of watching airplanes and chasing them across schoolyards and pastures, Vernon finally took his first airplane ride was, as he knew he would be, hooked on flying.
It would, however, take nearly five years of logging fliight time whenever and wherever he could afford it, before Vernon was a licensed private pilot. He was soloed by Charlie McAllister, Yakima, Washington flight instructor, flying icon and true gentleman. Charlie’s pilot’s license is signed by Orville Wright. Yes, that Orville Wright.
Vernon’s love of classic aircraft is evident, and his love of flying is well ingrained. No, he doesn’t have thousands of hours logged, nor does he have a wallet full of ratings. He also doesn’t have a wallet or bank account full of money. But he does have some valuable experience and he has researched some of his favorite aircraft well.
