Purpose: The purpose is to provide an in-depth examination of the biology and disorders of the human hair follicle. These editors are the first I have found who attack this difficult and generally poorly understood subject with expertise and enlightenment.
Audience: This book is written for dermatologists who specialize in treating hair disorders and desire to learn the scientific basis of the pathogenesis of such disorders.
Features: The chapter on atypical types of alopecia areata is fascinating, as is the section on the differences in neural innervation in alopecia areata. The editors make the structure and biology of the hair follicle so clear, and I haven't seen this in any other text to date. The diagrams are excellent. I am anxiously awaiting the next edition in which I hope there will be an expanded discussion on the effects laser has on the cellular metabolism of the hair follicle. Those who treat hair disorders absolutely must have this book in their library. It is invaluable.
Assessment: After reading this book, practitioners will not dread hearing that the patient's chief complaint is hair loss. They will have been completely updated on the latest data and understand how to direct therapy. This book is not for the faint hearted; it must be read in its entirety in order to take advantage of what it has to offer. READERS CANNOT SKIM THIS BOOK. The discussions are excellent and require a thorough understanding of endocrinology and cellular biology. I have purchased many books on the subject and this one stands out above the rest.
