Hand-Turned Tales by Jude Knight

The stories in this book were written as “Made-to-Order” competition prizes. The winner chose three characters or objects and a story trope. What I did after that was up to me; the raw material of these ideas turned on the lathe of my imagination.

The book contains three short stories and a novella. I offer them as a sample of my writing style, the stories I love to tell, and the types of hero and heroine I love creating. I hope you enjoy following my characters through the turns in their tales.

The Raven's Lady
Felix returns home in disguise after thirteen years away from home. He plans to catch a smuggler, then take up his viscountcy. He does not expect the smuggler to be Joselyn, his childhood sweetheart. (Short story)

All That Glisters
The setting is New Zealand in the 1860s, when gold miners poured into the fledgling settlement of Dunedin. Rose is unhappy in the household of her fanatical uncle, but Thomas, a young merchant from Canada, offers a glimpse of another possible life, if she is brave enough to reach for it. (Short story)

Kidnapped to Freedom
Stolen from the Georgian plantation just ahead of being sold down the river, Phoebe faces the high seas to be reunited with her brother and sister, and the master’s son she once loved. Why then, are her dreams filled with the handsome, masked pirate who captains her rescue ship? (Short story)

The Prisoners of Wyvern Castle
Rupert has been imprisoned by his wicked sister, and compelled to wed. His new wife, Madeline, has likewise been threatened into saying her vows. Forced into marriage, they find love, but can they find freedom before it is too late?

About the Author

Jude Knight has been telling stories all her life: making up serial tales to amuse her friends and children, imagining sequels to books that have moved her and left her wanting more, occasionally submitting short stories to magazines and the radio, starting more than a dozen novels set in different times and places. She has devoted most of the last forty years to a career in commercial writing and raising a large family (most recently as grandmother-in-residence while a daughter was out of action for three years). She and her own personal romantic hero, with whom she has shared those forty+ years, now live with two cats and frequent visitors in a small town in rural New Zealand. Judy wrote and published her first historical romance in 2014, and now has the wind in her sails and a head full of strong determined heroines, heroes with the sense to appreciate them, and villains you'll love to loathe.

Great read for a Sunday afternoon. Thank you for sharing.

Very nice writing style, vocabulary and flow. Novella length allows for more detailed plot detail and resolution than shorter pieces, but all are enjoyable reads from an experienced story spinner.

As I already adore Jude's writing, I knew that I would enjoy this book with three short stories and one novella. It did not disappoint! Such interesting and unique characters-a raven, a blind hero, a pirate and a success in the gold rush. Each story is unique and offers a sample of Jude's wonderful writing and imagination. My favorite was The Prisoners of Wyvern Castle. Since it is a prequel to Embracing Prudence, a 2016 release, I am excited for the continuing story.

A wonderful collection of 3 short stories & 1 novella by the talented Jude Knight. The short stories are written from ideas provided by winners of her contests. They provide things they would like to read about & Jude writes the story. Everything from a “dead” viscount who secretly works for the crown investigating smugglers only to find that his childhood friend is among those labeled as a smuggler – a female smuggler. When the one he is looking for comes looking for her can he protect her? When he reveals his true identity can she forgive him? Will a raven prove to be their saviour? To a tale of a slave & her break to freedom & the mysterious pirate who helps her escape. To New Zealand & tales of gold. Can the owner of a mining supply company rescue the damsel who is below the status of servant in her religious uncle’s home? The novella is a prequel to the upcoming Embracing Prudence. An earl held captive by his vengeful half sister & the woman he is forced to wed. A woman forced to wed by her power hungry half brother. Can these two make a go of their marriage while being held as prisoners? A beautiful, hopeful story. These stories are an excellent sampling of Ms. Knight’s writing style. A writing style that holds a little something for everyone. I, for one, am looking forward to exploring more of her books and know that I will enjoy every one.

Hand-Turned Tales by Jude Knight Three Short Stories and a Novella The following stories are like a sampler pack for the author's writing. The stories were written for winners of a contest. They gave some names and ideas and the author wrote these stories from them. The Raven's Lady Felix Maddox returns home after he was thought dead. Under a false name he has one last job...find a smuggler, the Black Fox. Could the villain actually be the girl he left behind eight years ago? All That Glisters Thomas O'Bryan is in New Zealand on business. When he stops in to pay his respects to his aunt, he finds a bitter couple and a beautiful young woman. He would love to remove Rose from her unhappy situation but they are too different. Or are they? Kidnapped to Freedom Phoebe has missed several chances of being rescued from the plantation she is a slave on. She has one more chance to be reunited with her siblings and perhaps the young man she once loved. If she can remember that love instead of the handsome pirate that has come to her rescue. The Prisoners of Wyvern Castle I really enjoyed this novella. It has the villains that you'd more than happily lop their heads off of. The hero that nabs your heart the moment you know his story. Not to mention the romance between Rupert and Madeline and the chasm they have to cross for their happily-ever-after. **Sensual content
