Overview

Happiness is a Smoking Gun (A Clarissa Spencer Cozy Mystery, #1) by Alaine Allister

A bossy cat.  An eccentric aunt.  An unsolved murder.

Out of work reporter Clarissa Spencer is being stalked by a stray cat. She can’t cook to save her life, her garden is an overgrown mess and her chocolate chip cookie addiction is out of control. Then to top it all off, she gets struck by lightning.

Clarissa thinks she has it bad - until she learns the town mayor has been murdered.  Okay, so it could be worse...

Clarissa makes it her mission to expose the true killer before her arch nemesis - an infuriatingly handsome reporter from the city newspaper - can. Unfortunately, solving a murder is easier said than done...especially with the lunacy in Clarissa's life!

Well-written and funny! This cozy is well-written and lol funny. Really enjoyed how the character thinks, and she is very relatable. Storyline is well-thought-out and is just the right length. No swearing, no sex, no explicit violence. Just a really nice book, if you like cozy mysteries. Highly recommend!

For some reason, I didn't hold out much hope for this book after reading a few pages. Even more surprising is the fact that I loved it. Not alot of magic in this book... what with her just finding out out about her powers and having trouble believing the truth of it. I am sure that the magic will be very evident in future entries in this series. For those who are trying to figure out whether to read this little novel or not...oh, please do! You will enjoy yourself and most of all... it will definitely get you in the mood for episode two! I am more than ready.... will you be? :)

A delightful cozy mystery with a charming female lead and a hunky male lead. Highly recommend.

and I can see how the author is attempting to paint the heroine of the story, but it just falls short for me. Instead of a relatable, curious, quirky character with a sweet-tooth, Clarissa comes across as a rude, practically binge-eating, busy-body. The disdain for her adopted cat just rubs me the wrong way. Her character reminds me of that girl in high school you wanted to feel sorry for, but couldn't because she was just mean-spirited, held grudges, and stuck her nose in other people's business. The writing itself was sub-par and the plot predictable. No thank you.

Some of the language is awkward but characters, plot, and setting are very good. Cozy fans will love it.

The ending was a little short, I was waiting to see how the mayor's wife and family thanked Clarissa by keeping her word to help them clear her name. I also wondered why it took so long for her to connect the teen with the case, why does everything have to be at the last moment? Well I hope Clarissa gets Parker and perfect her magic with out mishaps.

Good for an hour of doing nothing.
