Hawthorne Cottage

Volume one of the Professor Alexander Greystone series. Professor Greystone, who can see and converse with the dead, takes a holiday from London and travels to Hampshire, where he discovers that the cottage he has rented is haunted by seven long dead sisters. Suspecting that they were murdered, the professor sets out to find the circumstances behind the sisters' untimely deaths, but ultimately, he discovers something more horrifying.
