Brad Meltzer's collection of those men and women, famous and everyday who impacted his life is incredibly moving. Written for his son, it is not just a book for children, but a book that will help inspire everyone to look at those in their lives and see what they have taught them.

Wonderful little gift book, full of heroes and thinkers and performers to inspire and inform. While it's an obvious bonding gift for father and son, any relationship can share this collection of great ideas and personalities. It will inspire reading and researching and it is something that a parent and child can sit with and talk about. A homerun on this out of character book for Brad Meltzer.

After hearing the author talk about this book recently on NPR Radio, I decided to look at the book. I liked what I saw and purchased a copy. The author has chosen a little over fifty people he considers heroes and written a short summary of what they did to make them heroes in his mind. In the introduction, and in talks the author has given about his book, he has said that he felt it would be very worthwhile to provide his son with a list of heroes to know about. He goes on to describe the typical young child's hero as simply someone who is currently well known. The author, and most of us know that that criteria alone is not really very adequate and that it is important for young people to know what most of us do consider credentials for heroic stature. As the author states, his chosen heroes have reached the status for any of several reasons, and that some are well known, some not.The author feels that the reader probably knowws some and maybe many more that could be added. He has left space at the end of the book for the reader to add his own favorite hero to the book, before giving it to his son or daughter. He has also left the dedication of the book up to the reader to fill in.In this way the author expects you to personalize the book and to pass it on to a young person.I have read each entry and am impressed by the author's choices for inclusion and his clear style in summarizing each person's reason for inclusion.

Reviewed by Kristie Ingerto for Readers' Favorite Heroes for My Son, written and read by Brad Meltzer, is an audiobook that will leave you inspired and thinking about lessons that are important to instill in your sons. This audiobook is a wonderful collection of people the author considers to be heroes, heroes that he wants his sons to learn about and strive to emulate. Meltzer shares how his life changed when he became a dad and why he wrote this book.  Martin Luther King, Jr., Harriet Tubman, Amelia Earhart, and Anne Sullivan are a few of the heroes included in this book and the stories shared about each individual are truly inspiring. I loved the personal touch that Meltzer included as he begins with sharing why he wrote this book and also including his son in the recording of this audiobook. Track 9 is a tidbit about Roberto Clemente who is Meltzer’s son’s favorite athlete. Meltzer shares when he first showed the book to his son and his reaction. I really enjoyed this part of the book; it is probably my favorite track. Beginning each track with a word or two about the individual before saying the individual’s name is a great format and introduction. I also like the CD of pictures that is included; this is a nice touch to the audiobook and really completes it. Each of these tracks will inspire both children and adults to think about their lives, how they live their lives and the legacy they wish to leave.

Great synopsis of admirable role models. Must read for children--and adults who have gotten cynical of the world.

As a parent, reading / language development specialist, and gift-giver, I have found multiple uses for this excellent book. Visually simple and concise but complex in thought and vocabulary, it is the ideal teaching tool for all ages.
